Vein problems, such as spider veins and varicose veins, are common in the legs and elsewhere on the body. They share a common cause in issues with veins, but manifest themselves in distinctive ways. - Spider veins are tiny, thin veins that appear close to the skin's surface and can be either red or blue in color. They are also known as telangiectasias or venulectasias. Because of their web-like or branching appearance, these veins are commonly referred to as "spider veins." While not usually dangerous, they can be unsightly and even cause moderate discomfort like itching or burning. Spider veins are often brought on by inheritance, hormonal changes (such those seen during pregnancy), obesity, and extended standing or sitting. Sclerotherapy (injecting a solution into the veins to shut them), laser therapy, and minimally invasive procedures are some of the aesthetic treatments available for spider veins. - Varicose veins are enlarged veins that twist and bulge outward and frequently appear blue or purple in hue. They tend to manifest themselves in the legs and can cause discomfort or pain. Blood pools and veins swell due to varicose veins when vein valves become broken or weak. Varicose veins are more likely to develop in those who are predisposed to them because of variables like age, obesity, pregnancy, and prolonged periods of standing or sitting. Compression stockings, leg elevation, and medical procedures including endovenous laser treatment (EVLT), radiofrequency closure, and vein stripping are only some of the lifestyle changes and medical procedures that can be used to treat varicose veins.
