Book Description
Excerpt from Medallic History of Napoleon: A Collection of All the Medals, Coins, and Jettons, Relating to His Actions and Reign, From the Year 1796-1815 In the year 1806, the late Chevalier Millin, Keeper of the Collection of Medals and Antiquities in the National Library at Paris, published a Medallic History of the French Revolution, containing a description of all the Medals and Coins struck from the convocation of the States General in 1789, till the first campaign of General Bonaparte in Italy, in 1796. In his preface to this work, the author announced his intention of giving shortly to the public a second part, entitled, "A Medallic History of Napoleon," illustrating the interval between 1796 and the battle of Austerlitz in 1805. This work, although anxiously expected, never appeared. As the events which afterwards took place in France, no longer admitted of such a publication in that country; the Chevalier Millin, some time before his death, disposed of the copper-plates and the manuscript to the Editor. To the Plates, which were thirty-four in number, the Editor has added five, viz. Nos. 29, 36, 37, 38, 39. containing pieces omitted by M. Millin: making in all thirty-nine Plates, which form the First Part of this work. And that the Collection may be as complete as possible, he has also added a Second Part, beginning in 1806, and ending with the second abdication of Napoleon in 1815. Book Description
This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1820 edition. Excerpt: ... No. 28. the tomb of desaix on mount st. bernard. Desaix, a man who was as feeling as he was brave, had often repeated on seeing the tombs of the Arabs, that the aspect of the de sert was that of death for the living and peace for the dead. When the assigning a place for the tomb of this hero was in question, Napoleon fancied he was acting conformably to the melancholy ideas of him whose memory he cherished, by fixing on the Church of the Monastery of Mount St. Bernard, the most elevated and the most silent of all European habitations. He caused a magnificent tomb to be erected, and ornamented with a bas relief, which represented the moment he received his death wound and fell from his horse. The hero is received in the arms of his aid-de-camp the Duke of Parma. Victory, which hovers over their heads does not arrest her course; this alludes to the battle of Marengo, gained by the French immediately after the death of General Desaix, who had just decided the success of the day by a skilful manoeuvre. The Emperor could not preside at the funeral pomp which was however conducted with all the dignity due to the hero for whom it was ordered and to him who paid this homage to the manes of a great man. The medal commemorating this event, and given to every soldier who witnessed the ceremony; exhibits on one side the head of the Sovereign with the inscription on the field, Napoleon Emperor. On the reverse is the grave as it now stands, and on the field the inscription. Napoleon to the manes of Desaix. date First stone laid by the Emperor xxv. Prarial year, xiii. 3d June, 1804. No. 29. There is another medal on the same subject, on which is represented a similar monument. On the reverse within
