Measurements of Distributed Combustion
Author: P. C. Braithwaitet
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 60
Book Description
The problem of combustion instability in solid rocket propellants has been studied extensively over the past three decades. The most common way oscillatory combustion is controlled in rocket motors today is through the use of additives known as acoustic suppressants. The perfect suppressant would control all of the oscillatory modes which are present in a solid propellant rocket motor. Unfortunately suppressants that work well at one frequency, such as the product in a longitudinal mode, can be quite ineffective at other frequencies, such as tangential mode. Still, some suppressants have been relatively successful in suppressing oscillations in operational motors, the more successful suppressants include Al, ZrC and graphite.

Combustion Instabilities in Liquid Rocket Engines
Author: Mark L. Dranovsky
Publisher: AIAA (American Institute of Aeronautics & Astronautics)
ISBN: 9781563479212
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 352
Book Description
This is the first book in the literature to cover the development and testing practices for liquid rocket engines in Russia and the former Soviet Union.Combustion instability represents one of the most challenging probelms in the development of propulsion engines. A famous example is the F-1 engines for the first stage of the Saturn V launch vehicles in the Apollo project. More than 2000 full engine tests and a vast number of design modifications were conducted to cure the instability problem. This book contains first-hand information about the testing and development practices for treating liquid rocket combustion-instability problems in Russia and the former Soviet Union. It covers more than 50 years of research, with an emphasis placed on the advances made since 1970.The book was prepared by a former R&D director of the Research Institute of Chemical Engineering, NIICHIMMASH, the largest liquid rocket testing center in the world, and has been carefully edited by three well-known experts in the field.

The Influence of Mean Flow on Rocket Motor Combustion Instability. Volume I. Basic Analysis, Mean Flow Application to the T-Burner. Volume II. Effect of Turbulence on Acoustic Waves in a Cavity. Volume III. Vortex Generated Sound in Solid Propellant
Author: Gary A. Flandro
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 354
Book Description
The report consists of two problems related to acoustic combustion instability in solid propellant rockets. In the first problem, coupled acoustic cavities with mass flux across a common boundary are studied. Since the propellant grain in a solid rocket motor may assume various configurations to meet specific performance criteria, physical models considering two or more wave-carrying systems coupled together so that acoustic motion of each is affected by the other are required in the study of acoustic instability in some motor designs. In the second problem, linear analyses employing both one-dimensional and three-dimensional flow models of the T-burner are studied to resolve which is the more appropriate representation of the growth of acoustic models yield an identical expression for the acoustic growth rate of dominant longitudinal modes in the T-burner if properly formulated. (Author).
