The primary purpose of my dissertation was to assess two competing models of catch-related attitudes (CRA) of recreational anglers for: 1) valid psychometric measurement, 2) consistency of CRA under different angling contexts, and 3) effect of CRA on angler preferences. Data came from a statewide survey of 6,924 licensed Texas anglers, and a follow-up survey of 1,078 freshwater catfish anglers identified by the statewide survey. I used confirmatory factor analysis to determine that a 4-construct model of CRA provided better fit to the data than a 3-construct model, and was configural and metric invariant across gender, ethnic, and angling context groups indicating cross-group comparisons would be unbiased. However, low factor loadings on several items, and low variance extracted estimates, indicate that current CRA scales require refinement. Additionally, structural equation models found that angler responses to the CRA scale were moderately consistent when measured in generic and species-specific contexts (50-60% shared variance), and the relationship between the two was not consistently moderated by measures of angling avidity. Next, I assessed influence of CRA on angler fishing trip preferences using a stated choice analysis. Results showed that angler choice of hypothetical fishing trips was influenced primarily by travel costs and catch-related trip attributes, and that CRA were significant mediators of angler preferences for associated trip attributes. Finally, I used a latent class state choice model to analyze separate trip choice models for five sub-groups of catfish anglers divided based on their CRA scores. Individual models showed considerable variation in preference for catch-related attributes paralleling strength of each groups' attitudes towards a given CRA construct. Overall, results indicated that CRA scales are valid predictors of angler preferences and behavioral intentions. Human dimensions researchers studying angler populations will find the CRA scale to be a useful tool to incorporate into predictive models of angler behavior and preferences. Furthermore, fisheries managers should find the CRA scales useful to assess management preferences of an increasingly heterogeneous angler clientele, and aide them in designing management plans that efficiently meet angler needs and catch-related expectations.

A catch-related attitude measurement scale is used for discerning an angler's evaluation of catching fish in four constructs (catching something, catching numbers, catching large fish, and retaining fish) in two studies. The first study was of resident (instate) and nonresident (out-of-state) anglers at Sardis and Grenada reservoirs and the second was of hand grabblers and rod and reel catfish anglers. In the first study at Sardis Reservoir, there were no differences in catch-related attitudes between groups. At Grenada Reservoir, there were differences between groups toward catching large fish and retaining fish. In the second study, hand grabblers had stronger attitudes toward catching large fish than rod and reel catfish anglers but rod and reel catfish anglers had stronger attitudes toward catching numbers. Knowledge of catch-related attitudes can lead to more palatable regulations that enhance angler satisfaction and ultimately retain and recruit new and lapsed anglers.

The primary purposes of this dissertation were understanding the nature of an attitudinal scale designed to measure the consumptive orientation of recreational anglers and filling a gap in the published literature regarding measurement using the scale. Consumptive orientation was defined as the attitude anglers hold towards catching fish, including catching something, retaining fish (as opposed to releasing), catching largefish (size), and catching large amounts of fish (numbers). In order to confirm these four attitudes are measured by the scale, a model was hypothesized and tested using a confirmatory factor analysis on a sample of male anglers in Texas. It was reasoned that a different subculture may interpret the attitudinal statements differently; thus, the structure of the scale was explored using women as a separate sample. Finally, an example of how the scale could be used was provided by examining differences between tournament and nontournament anglers' attitudes towards the four constructs measured by the scale. Overall, results were varied with the hypothesized model used to confirm the scale. While results indicated dropping four of the sixteen statements would not result in a significant change in the structure of the scale, results also confirmed there were four distinct attitudes measured by the consumptive orientation scale. The use of the scale with the larger angling population was confirmed by finding the same structure using a sample of women anglers. Finally, the scale was shown to be useful for examining activity-specific differences in angling social worlds. Differences were detected between tournament and nontournament anglers on three of the four consumptive attitudes: "catching numbers," "catching large/trophy fish," and "retainingfish." Differences found were related to the commitment level of tournament and nontournament anglers. Further analysis examined how avidity may have affected differences among angler groups. These differences further current knowledge about tournament anglers and their expectations for fishing experiences. Overall, results support the usefulness of the consumptive orientation scale as a survey tool for understanding recreational fishing clientele.

Human Dimensions (HD) research in recreational fisheries is predicated on the understanding that successful management depends on knowing what anglers want from their fishing experience. While researchers have long recognized that diversity exists among anglers in terms of attitudes and preferences, few comparative studies account for the role played by diverse fishing opportunities in fulfilling anglers' goals. Instead, most studies focus either on fishing as a general activity or generalize from fishery-specific case studies. Consequently, HD research has faced criticism from fisheries ecologists and managers regarding its management relevance. Leveraging an initiative to develop comprehensive catch and harvest information in the German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (M-V) I collected additional angler information to explore HD constructs. I used recreation specialization as a framework for understanding angler heterogeneity while exploring how resource diversity affects preferred recreational outcomes. First, I examined the link between motivations and behavior, demonstrating that the relative importance of catch and non-catch outcomes depends on target species, and that angler specialization and motivations are related. Second, I used random utility theory to test how well different measures of specialization explain preference heterogeneity observed after accounting for target species, finding centrality-to-lifestyle to be the best predictor. Third, I examined the influence of centrality-to-lifestyle and target species on the importance of several catch and non-catch characteristics related to satisfaction-with-catch. While the model parameters suggested that more and larger fish are universally desired, the relative importance of these characteristics depended on both targeted species and specialization level. For my last study, I presented a case study of particular relevance to conservation of the European eel (Anguilla anguilla) fishery in M-V, by evaluating the effect of proposed regulatory changes on angling effort and harvest. Overall, and regardless of the specialization level, anglers were largely unresponsive to proposed legislation to partially close the fishery, suggesting more drastic measures may be required to meet ecological objectives. Together, these studies reinforce that researchers and practitioners should be wary of applying general insights of HD research to specific situations. Not only does the 'average' angler not exist, but neither does the 'average' fishing trip.
