Max Weber's Methodologies
Author: Sven Eliæson
Publisher: Blackwell Publishing
ISBN: 9780745618135
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 230
Book Description
Max Weber is widely regarded as the most important and influential figure in the history of the social sciences. Among other things, he wrote extensively on the methodology of the social sciences, but his writings on methodology are complex and are the subject of many conflicting interpretations. In this authoritative new book, Sven Eliaeson provides a comprehensive introduction to Weber's methodology and to the various ways it has been interpreted by subsequent scholars in Europe and the United States. Eliaeson shows how the vested interests of scholars have resulted in biased interpretations of Weber's work. Weber was preoccupied with the intellectual problems of his time and not with our current disciplinary crises. By placing Weber's thought and methodology in its historical context, Eliaeson is able to provide a masterly reconstruction of his central concerns while at the same time exploring the enduring relevance of Weber's work for sociology today. This book will be recognized as a definitive work on Weber's methodology and will be an indispensable text for students and scholars in sociology and the social sciences.

Das Reich
Author: Max Hastings
Publisher: Quarto Publishing Group USA
ISBN: 161058824X
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 298
Book Description
A world-renowned British historian recounts the actions of one of Hitler’s most elite armor units in one of World War II’s most horrific months. June 1944, the month of the D-Day landings carried out by Allied forces in Normandy, France. Germany’s 2nd SS Panzer Division, one of Adolf Hitler’s most elite armor units, had recently been pulled from the Eastern Front and relocated to France in order to regroup, recruit more troops, and restock equipment. With Allied forces suddenly on European ground, the division—Das Reich—was called up to counter the invasion. Its march northward to the shores of Normandy, 15,000 men strong, would become infamous as a tale of unparalleled brutality in World War II. Das Reich is Sir Max Hastings’s narrative of the atrocities committed by the 2nd SS Panzer Division during June of 1944: first, the execution of 99 French civilians in the village of Tulle on June 9; and second, the massacre of 642 more in the village of Oradour-sur-Glane on June 10. Throughout the book, Hastings expertly shifts perspective between French resistance fighters, the British Secret Service (who helped coordinate the French resistance from afar and on the ground), and the German soldiers themselves. With its rare, unbiased approach to the ruthlessness of World War II, Das Reich explores the fragile moral fabric of wartime mentality. Praise for Das Reich “A gripping blend of narrative and investigation.” —Evening Standard “This classic account of WWII is a microcosm of the global conflict. Hastings brings to life the horror that the 2nd SS Panzer division, Das Reich, inflicted upon the citizens living in a bucolic corner of France.” —Dennis Showalter, author of Patton and Rommel and Hitler’s Panzers

Frozen Styph
Author: Ronald Jay Cohen
Publisher: Author House
ISBN: 1463421001
Category : Humor
Languages : en
Pages : 225
Book Description
Frozen foods magnate Maxwell F. Styph has had himself frozen. Now, friends, family, and business associates are coming to a memorial dinner party to say goodbye to Max. This was the premise behind a hilariously funny, audience-interactive approach to theater innovated by psychologist/playwright, Ronald Jay Cohen. The first drafts had been written by Cohen as a funeral, set in a chapel. In these early versions of the play, Cohen tried to write a comedy that answered the question: What if they gave a funeral, and everyone who came told the truth about the deceased? As the play took shape, Cohen began to experience some uneasiness with the material. Despite the fact that portions of the script were riotously funny, the focus of the play was squarely on some very unpleasant realities of life. At least some audience members might have sensitivities about, or even painful associations towards, material that dealt with loss and eulogies. Somehow, the script had to be lightened-up, allowing audience members to better distance themselves from the goings-on, and freely laugh at what was taking place. But how could that be done? Cohens solution was to make the situation a little wackier, more atypical, and less realistic. Instead of a coffin prop, a seven-foot, smoking, cryonic chamber would be utilized. And instead of being put-up in a traditional theater with a chapel set on stage, the play would run in a restaurant, and be couched as a memorial dinner party. In addition to scripted eulogies from cast members, audience members themselves would be permitted to construct and verbalize their own, often unflattering or outrageous memories of the person being honored. And that is how Frozen Styph was conceived. See the play if you can. For now, enjoy the novel!
