Beloved for his 32 Rose Etudes for Clarinet book, C. Rose -- full name Chrysogone Cyrille Rose was an important French clarinetist, and served as principal clarinet at the Paris Opera. He was a teacher and composer of pedagogical material for the clarinet, much of which (like this 32 Etudes) is still widely in use today. Cyrille Rose was taught by Hyacinthe Klosé. He studied under Klosé at the Paris Conservatoire, winning the First Prize in 1847. SECOND EDITION - These thirty compositions were transcribed for the Renaissance guitar, guitar and for the baritone ukulele from a facsimile copy of Guillaume Morlaye's first book of tablature for the guitar. Most are also playable on the soprano and tenor ukulele. The re-entrant tuning of the ukulele does not detract at all from what would otherwise be a faithful rendition of these compositions. Most of the pieces sound just fine and, in fact, while testing each piece for playability and checking for mistakes, I had both my tenor and baritone ukuleles close by my side. The music ranges from fairly easy to intermediate skill levels. I encourage you to experiment with the ornamentation and make these pieces your own. Have fun!

Perotin (Latin Perotinus) was a most gifted composer of the Notre Dame school, which, during the late twelfth and early thirteenth centuries, was the first school to produce polyphony of international acclaim. Four of the works included in this collection are organa. A Perotin organum consists of a liturgical chant melody and text, which forms the tenor or cantus firmus. Its rhythm is altered. In approximately the same vocal range, the composer added one, two or three other voices, the duplum, triplum and quadruplum, all of them in one of the six rhythmic patterns known as modi. Seven of the works included in this collection are motets. These originated throug the tradition of troping, which consisted of the addition of a text to a melismatic piece of music. In motets, it was the duplum of an organum or clausula which was troped. When this happend the duplum was called motetus, and this name was adapted for the entire composition.
