Book Description
What type of Old Testament text did Matthew use as editor of his Gospel? On the one hand, the editorially inserted fulfilment quotations with their peculiar textual form may be expected to represent Matthew's biblical text. On the other hand, the remaining OT quotations are mainly Septuagintal, and it is often assumed that Matthew reinforced the Septuagintal character of the quotations which he found in his sources. In the first part of this study, the fulfilment quotations are examined. Their textual form is best explained as a Septuagint text that was revised to make it better agree with the Hebrew and to improve the quality of its Greek; the evangelist took these quotations from a continuous text. In the second part, Matthew's remaining OT quotations are investigated. If Matthew borrows quotations from his sources, he does not adjust them to the LXX but he simply copies them or edits them in his usual way; if he inserts quotations into his sources, he makes use of his revised Septuagint. On the whole, this revised Septuagint seems to have been "Matthew's Bible".

Book Description
They say the Bible is true, but does it ring true? Does it resonate? In this journey through the Gospel of Matthew, Matt Woodley considers the audacious idea of a God with us--confronting us in the midst of all we've invested ourselves in and dedicated ourselves to, and encouraging us with the promise that the God who made us has a better life in mind for us. The Resonate series recovers the ancient wisdom of Scripture for a complex world. The stories and insights of each book of the Bible are brought into conversation with contemporary voices of hope and lament--the cultural messages we interact with on a daily basis. The Scriptures become a meeting ground where God is confronted with the pressing concerns of our day, and we are confronted in turn with a fresh experience of God's truth.

Book Description
The Matthew's Bible brings together the work of two giants of sixteenth century English Bible translation. William Tyndale and Myles Coverdale shared a vision of making the scriptures available to ordinary believers concerned that their authority might be undermined in a time when kings and clerics alike opposed translating them into English. William Tyndale's New Testament (1526) was the first English translation made from the original language, and it made the most of the emerging English tongue. Knowing neither Hebrew nor Greek, Myles Coverdale consulted Latin, English and German sources to guide his work. The vocabulary of Tyndale, John Wycliff, and other appears in the Coverdale Bible (1535), which was the first complete Bible in English. John Rogers combined Tyndale's and Coverdale's texts -- supplying some translation work of his own -- to create the Matthew's Bible. In was attributed to a fictitious "Thomas Matthew," concealing the inclusion of Tyndale's text so King Henry VIII would license the volume's publication. So popular became the Matthew's Bible that bishops were encouraged to order copies for their parishes. This book is a facsimile of one of the finest existing copies of the Matthew's Bible. It features clear, legible type and faithfully reproduced, color pages with a new introduction by Dr. Joseph W. Johnson. -- Back cover

Book Description
Among homiletical commentaries this one stands supreme for many reasons. The author opens doors and challenges the reader to a vigorous investigation. His conclusions, often startling, illuminate the Gospel clearly. Instead of verbosity, he expresses much in few words. Dr. Thomas is practical and provides excellent stimulus for sermon preparation. His powerful, yet restrained imagination, presses into its service all nature, life, science, art and history. After thoroughly grasping his theme, he pours his soul into it, develops it in a logical manner, and enunciates his 123 discourses with thrilling effect.
