Book Description
Have you ever wondered why a rainbow is curved? Or why left-handers aren't extinct? How a sunflower is like a synchronised swimmer, or a lightning bolt is like a blood vessel? The answer to all these questions and more can be summed up in one simple word: MATHS. As the inimitable Eddie Woo explains, maths is not just about numbers. Maths is about patterns, and our universe is extraordinarily patterned. With enthusiasm and wonder, Eddie is here to help us discover these patterns. With engaging clarity and entertaining anecdotes, Eddie demonstrates the intricacy of maths in all the things we love - from music in our iPods to our credit cards. Filled with humour and heart, this book will fascinate, entertain and illuminate the maths that surrounds us. This is a specially formatted fixed layout ebook that retains the look and feel of the print book. LONGLISTED FOR THE ABIA GENERAL NON-FICTION BOOK OF THE YEAR 2019 PRAISE FOR EDDIE WOO "I never thought I'd read a maths book cover to cover, let alone sing its praises. Eddie Woo makes maths fun, accessible and relevant. Now we can all benefit from his extraordinary skill as a teacher." JENNY BROCKIE, journalist and TV host "Not just a great teacher, Woo's Wonderful World of Maths shows Eddie to be a storyteller too. Is there anything the Woo cannot do?" Book Description
The Math Handbook has been developed for students with Dyscalculia and others who are struggling with mathematics. The book is based upon the Singapore Primary Mathematics curriculum, as well as the International Math curriculum. More than twenty topics are covered and explained step by step through visual representation to convey mathematical concepts. It has been specially developed for: • Students who have been diagnosed with Dyscalculia; other terms may include Mathematics Learning Disability, or Mathematics Disorder • Students who have been diagnosed with Dyslexia; as according to research more than fifty percent of those experience difficulties with mathematics. Some students may have Dyslexia and Dyscalculia as co-existing disorders • Students diagnosed with ADHD; as they may struggle with mathematics. Some students may have ADHD and Dyscalculia as co-existing disorders. • Students who have difficulties in learning Mathematics • Slow learners • Teens/Adults who have severe Math Difficulties or Dyscalculia Students will gain more confidence in mathematics, become more independent and produce better results. This book will provide them with an opportunity to experience success and maintain a positive attitude towards math. It is suitable to be used in combination with Educational Therapy or remedial intervention in Math that students with dyscalculia or Math difficulties need. An assessment conducted by a psychologist is essential and early interventions are most effective. • Please note that the flowable ePub edition of The Math Handbook for tablets and mobile devices may not appear as well organized since the material doesn't always appear together on a single page as in the print edition. Therefore, we recommend the print editions for the students.

Book Description
This book records my efforts over the past four years to capture in words a description of the form and function of Mathematics, as a background for the Philosophy of Mathematics. My efforts have been encouraged by lec tures that I have given at Heidelberg under the auspices of the Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung, at the University of Chicago, and at the University of Minnesota, the latter under the auspices of the Institute for Mathematics and Its Applications. Jean Benabou has carefully read the entire manuscript and has offered incisive comments. George Glauberman, Car los Kenig, Christopher Mulvey, R. Narasimhan, and Dieter Puppe have provided similar comments on chosen chapters. Fred Linton has pointed out places requiring a more exact choice of wording. Many conversations with George Mackey have given me important insights on the nature of Mathematics. I have had similar help from Alfred Aeppli, John Gray, Jay Goldman, Peter Johnstone, Bill Lawvere, and Roger Lyndon. Over the years, I have profited from discussions of general issues with my colleagues Felix Browder and Melvin Rothenberg. Ideas from Tammo Tom Dieck, Albrecht Dold, Richard Lashof, and Ib Madsen have assisted in my study of geometry. Jerry Bona and B.L. Foster have helped with my examina tion of mechanics. My observations about logic have been subject to con structive scrutiny by Gert Miiller, Marian Boykan Pour-El, Ted Slaman, R. Voreadou, Volker Weispfennig, and Hugh Woodin.

Book Description
How can we break the cycle of frustrated students who "drop out of math" because the procedures just don't make sense to them? Or who memorize the procedures for the test but don't really understand the mathematics? Max Ray-Riek and his colleagues at the Math Forum @ Drexel University say "problem solved," by offering their collective wisdom about how students become proficient problem solvers, through the lens of the CCSS for Mathematical Practices. They unpack the process of problem solving in fresh new ways and turn the Practices into activities that teachers can use to foster habits of mind required by the Common Core: communicating ideas and listening to the reflections of others estimating and reasoning to see the "big picture" of a problem organizing information to promote problem solving using modeling and representations to visualize abstract concepts reflecting on, revising, justifying, and extending the work. Powerful Problem Solving shows what's possible when students become active doers rather than passive consumers of mathematics. Max argues that the process of sense-making truly begins when we create questioning, curious classrooms full of students' own thoughts and ideas. By asking "What do you notice? What do you wonder?" we give students opportunities to see problems in big-picture ways, and discover multiple strategies for tackling a problem. Self-confidence, reflective skills, and engagement soar, and students discover that the goal is not to be "over and done," but to realize the many different ways to approach problems.
