A Treatise of Iron and Steel, Vol. 2
Author: Robert Henry Thurston
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780656910441
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 796
Book Description
Excerpt from A Treatise of Iron and Steel, Vol. 2: Materials of Engineering Examples of alloys are seen in gold and silver coins, in which the precious metals are hardened by alloying them with copper, to give them greater durability. Copper is too soft and tough to allow of its being conveniently worked, and it is therefore, for most purposes, alloyed with tin or zinc, and these alloys - bronze and brass - are, by varying the propor tions of the metals used, adapted to awide range of useful application. Alloys of copper and tin exhibit strikingly the fact noted above, that the alloy may have widely different properties from either constituent.
