Ancient Indonesian sculpture, as yet a relatively unexplored area of research, is discussed in this volume from various angles. The nine contributions originate from an international symposium at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Robert L. Brown formulates a set of rules that account for the way Indian art was transformed when adopted in Southeast Asian regions. Sara Schastok shows how the dating of Amaravātī style bronzes was influenced by colonial thinking. In comparing the northeast Indian and Javanese bronzes figurines, Susan L. Huntington concludes that although Javanese bronzes owe something to northeast Indian ones, each group has its own distinctive characteristics. Pauline Lunsingh Scheurleer’s contribution stresses the Javanese aspects of Javanese bronzes. Nandana Chutiwongs focuses on images of Avalokiteśvara in this manifestation as Great Compassionate Lord. A fragment of a bronze-ringed rattle leads A. de Vries Robbé to trace the development of this attribute of mendicant Buddhist monks from India, over mainland Southeast Asia, to Central and East Java. Moving to the great Buddhist monument in Central Java, the Borobudur, its structure and meaning are given a completely new interpretation by John C. Huntington. A northeast Indian iconographic model is proposed by J.A. Schoterman for the famous images of Amoghapāśa Lokeśvara and his retinue in the East Javanese temple Candi Jago. Finally, Marijke J. Klokke offers a new interpretation of the iconography of the East Javanese ‘portrait statues’.

The present book presents a detailed study of the life and times of the tantric expert Ngorchen Kunga Zangpo (Ngor chen Kun dga’ bzang po, 1382–1456), who was one of the most outstanding and influential Sakya masters of fifteenth-century Tibet. Among his many influential activities, Ngorchen is best remembered for his founding of the monastery of Ngor Ewam Choden (Ngor E waṃ chos ldan) in 1429. Withdrawing from the worldly distractions of the bustling town of Sakya (Sa skya) and sectarian conflicts, he left his traditional alma mater, the monastery of Sakya, and established his own monastic seat in the remote Ngor valley, some 30 kilometres southwest of modern Shigatse (gZhis ka rtse) in the central Tibetan province of Tsang (gTsang). There, based on the observance of a strict monastic discipline, Ngorchen hoped to return to traditional Sakya teaching and practice in a more supportive environment. Ngor immediately became a new centre for tantric training within the monastic circles of the Sakya school. As the leading tantric expert, Ngorchen trained a whole new generation of young students, producing some of the brightest minds of the Sakya school. At his monastic seat, Ngorchen and his abbatial successors established one of the most prominent subdivisions of the Sakya school, the Ngor tradition (ngor lugs), based on Ngorchen’s distinctive understanding of tantric ritual and practice. The religious influence of Ngor and its abbots extended to far-western Tibet (mNga’ ris), including Mustang (Glo bo), Purang (sPu hrang), Guge (Gu ge), Spiti (sPyi ti), and Ladakh (La dwags). In the following centuries, Ngor’s influence also extended eastwards to Khams, where the tradition became very influential in Derge (sDe dge), Lingtsang (Gling tshang), and Gapa (sGa pa). From the 17th century onward, the Ngorpa enjoyed the patronage of the ruling house of Derge, whose successive kings called upon retired abbots of Ngor to serve as their court chaplains (dbu bla).

This collection showcases the contributions of the study of endangered and understudied languages to historical linguistic analysis, and the broader relevance of diachronic approaches toward developing better informed approaches to language documentation and description. The volume brings together perspectives from both established and up-and-coming scholars and represents a globally and linguistically diverse range of languages.The collected papers demonstrate the ways in which endangered languages can challenge existing models of language change based on more commonly studied languages, and can generate innovative insights into linguistic phenomena such as pathways of grammaticalization, forms and dynamics of contact-driven change, and the diachronic relationship between lexical and grammatical categories. In so doing, the book highlights the idea that processes and outcomes of language change long held to be universally relevant may be more sensitive to cultural and typological variability than previously assumed.
