Book Description
A timely and expansive survey of a groundbreaking American art movement that overturned aesthetic hierarchies in a riot of color and ornamentation The Pattern and Decoration movement emerged in the 1970s as an embrace of long-dismissed art forms associated with the decorative. Pioneering artists such as Miriam Schapiro (1923-2015), Joyce Kozloff (b. 1942), Robert Kushner (b. 1949), and others appropriated patterns, frequently from non-Western decorative arts, to produce intricate, often dizzying or gaudy designs in media ranging from painting, sculpture, and collage to ceramics, installation art, and performance. This dazzling book showcases an astonishing array of works by more than 40 artists from across the United States, examining the movement's defiant adoption of art forms traditionally viewed as feminine, craft-based, or otherwise inferior to fine art. In addition to offering an overview of the Pattern and Decoration movement as it is commonly recognized, this volume considers artists of the period who are not typically associated with the movement. Rethinking the significance of patterns and the decorative in postwar American art, this panoramic view provides new insights into abstraction, feminism, and installation art. Essays explore the movement's feminist methods and values, including Miriam Schapiro's "femmage" practice; its impact on contemporary abstract painting; and its relationship to postmodern architecture and design. Artist biographies, an exhibition history, and reprints of historically significant writings further establish With Pleasure as the most expansive publication on the subject.

Book Description
Interweaving considerations of identity and subjectivity, spatial contexts, materiality and meaning, this collection addresses the status and interpretation of visual and material culture. It argues that objects are conduits or signs of meanings, pleasures, and desires that are deeply subjective; more often than not, they reveal racial, gendered, and sexual identities. Through case studies, contributors demonstrate material and visual cultures to be less separate than current disciplinary ethos indicates.

Book Description
Although the reception of the Eastern Father Gregory of Nyssa has varied over the centuries, the past few decades have witnessed a profound awakening of interest in his thought. The Body and Desire sets out to retrieve the full range of Gregory’s thinking on the challenges of the ascetic life by examining within the context of his theological commitments his evolving attitudes on what we now call gender, sex, and sexuality. Exploring Gregory’s understanding of the importance of bodily and spiritual maturation for the practices of contemplation and virtue, Raphael A. Cadenhead recovers the vital relevance of this vision of transformation for contemporary ethical discourse.

Book Description
Shri Lalita Trishati, like Lalita Sahasranama is discussed in Lalitopakhyana of Brahmandapurana, which is in the form of conversation between Shri Hayagriva (an incarnation of Vishnu and is considered as the presiding God for knowledge) and sage Agastya, who is a great worshiper of Parashakti through his own Panchadashi mantra which is different from the regular Panchadashi mantra (composed by Manmatha, who is also known as Cupid). Trishata means three hundred. Shri Lalita Trishati consists of three hundred namas, carved out of fifty nine couplet verses. Shri Lalita Devi has four forms viz. gross form, Kamakala form, Kundalini form, and mantra form. All these forms are explained in Lalita Sahasranama such as kamakala rupa (322), kundalini (110), mantra-sara (846), mahamantra (227). She is worshiped in various gross forms such as Kali, Tara, Gayatri (420), Mahalakshmi (210), etc. Kamakala is Her subtler form, where She remains intimately with Shiva. Her kundalini form is the subtlest of all and if She is made to ascend, She rushes to the top of the head, sahasrara, where She spends intimate moments with Her Lord Shiva. Worshiping Her mantra form is known as Shri Vidya. She represents all letters and words in the form of Shabdabrahman (Lalita Sahasranama 204 sarvamantra-svarupini). Each of Her gross form, such as Kali, Tara, etc as mentioned in Dashamahavidya, is worshipped with different mantras and these worships are known as Tantras. All the three hundred namas have been explained in detail by drawing references from Lalita Sahasranama , Upanishads, Saundaryalahari, Bhagavad Gita, etc. The namas are printed both in English and Sanskrit. Standard IAST format is used throughout this book.
