Book Description
Sources are the raw material of History, but whereas the written word has traditionally been seen as the principal source, historians now recognize the value of sources beyond text. In this new edition of History and Material Culture, contributors consider a range of objects – from an eighteenth-century bed curtain to a twenty-first-century shopping trolley – which can help historians develop new interpretations and new knowledge about the past. Containing two new chapters on healing objects in East Africa and the shopping trolley in the social world, this book examines a variety of material sources from around the globe and across centuries to assess how such sources can be used to study the distant and the recent past. In a revised introduction, Karen Harvey discusses some of the principal issues raised when historians use material culture, particularly in the context of 'the material turn', and suggests some initial steps for those unfamiliar with these kinds of sources. While the sources are discussed from interdisciplinary perspectives, the emphasis of the book is on what historians stand to gain from using material culture, as well as what historians have to offer the broader study of material culture. Clearly written and accessible, this book is the ideal introduction to the opportunities and challenges of researching material culture, and is essential reading for all students of historical theory and method.

Book Description
There are books aplenty on materials selection criteria for engineering design. Most cover the physical and mechanical properties of specific materials, but few offer much in the way of total product design criteria. This innovative new text/reference will give the “Big picture view of how materials should be selected—not only for a desired function but also for their ultimate performance, durability, maintenance, replacement costs, and so on. Even such factors as how a material behaves when packaged, shipped, and stored will be taken into consideration. For without that knowledge, a design engineer is often in the dark as to how a particular material used in particular product or process is going to behave over time, how costly it will be, and, ultimately, how successful it will be at doing what is supposed to do. This book delivers that knowledge. * Brief but comprehensive review of major materials functional groups (mechanical, electrical, thermal, chemical) by major material categories (metals, polymers, ceramics, composites)* Invaluable guidance on selection criteria at early design stage, including such factors as functionality, durability, and availability* Insight into lifecycle factors that affect choice of materials beyond simple performance specs, including manufacturability, machinability, shelf life, packaging, and even shipping characteristics* Unique help on writing materials selection specifications

Book Description
Naturally occurring radionuclides are found throughout the earth's crust, and they form part of the natural background of radiation to which all humans are exposed. Many human activities-such as mining and milling of ores, extraction of petroleum products, use of groundwater for domestic purposes, and living in houses-alter the natural background of radiation either by moving naturally occurring radionuclides from inaccessible locations to locations where humans are present or by concentrating the radionuclides in the exposure environment. Such alterations of the natural environment can increase, sometimes substantially, radiation exposures of the public. Exposures of the public to naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM) that result from human activities that alter the natural environment can be subjected to regulatory control, at least to some degree. The regulation of public exposures to such technologically enhanced naturally occurring radioactive materials (TENORM) by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and other regulatory and advisory organizations is the subject of this study by the National Research Council's Committee on the Evaluation of EPA Guidelines for Exposures to Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials.
