Book Description
Tools to make hard problems easier to solve. In this book, Sanjoy Mahajan shows us that the way to master complexity is through insight rather than precision. Precision can overwhelm us with information, whereas insight connects seemingly disparate pieces of information into a simple picture. Unlike computers, humans depend on insight. Based on the author's fifteen years of teaching at MIT, Cambridge University, and Olin College, The Art of Insight in Science and Engineering shows us how to build insight and find understanding, giving readers tools to help them solve any problem in science and engineering. To master complexity, we can organize it or discard it. The Art of Insight in Science and Engineering first teaches the tools for organizing complexity, then distinguishes the two paths for discarding complexity: with and without loss of information. Questions and problems throughout the text help readers master and apply these groups of tools. Armed with this three-part toolchest, and without complicated mathematics, readers can estimate the flight range of birds and planes and the strength of chemical bonds, understand the physics of pianos and xylophones, and explain why skies are blue and sunsets are red. Book Description
Young Daniel Naroditsky (1995) has picked the most instructive examples of endgames in which you have to use ideas and plans in order to outplay your opponent. This is not an encyclopaedia nor a manual on endings, which are usually helpful but boring, but a compendium of lively lessons and exercises. The positions that International Master Naroditsky uses should not be memorized, but understood, and his acclaimed didactic skills will take your endgame technique to the next level. Never before have the ideas that decide endings been explained so clearly. With exercise at the end of each chapter. ,

Book Description
Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject Business economics - Supply, Production, Logistics, grade: A-, University of Derby, course: Business and Professional English 2, language: English, abstract: Pursuant to Basu and Siems’ research (2004), plenty of books, journals and articles have been published in the recent past, to display growing importance of supply chain management. It is one of the most significant aspects of any kind of business. How does a company get the Right Things, to the Right Places, at the Right Time and for Profit? These are decisions which must be made. Throughout history and due to new ideas and technologies, supply chains have been changed. Railway, electricity and new ways of communication made them better, faster and cheaper. Nowadays, businesses are effectively improving their supply chains through better information engineering using the Internet and wireless telecommunications. The supply chain includes all activities linked with the flow and transfer of goods and services from the raw materials’ level through to the customers. (Basu and Siems, 2004) Synchronization between warehousing and distribution channels through the retail channels and ending with the consumer has become one of the main problems for Bruynzeel Keukens in 2005. Should the company completely restructure its supply chain or should it merely modify some processes along the chain? What exactly should be reorganized and how fundamentally should the restructuring be made?

Book Description
Management is a craft - a universal discipline, the most important one of the 21st century. In this book, the leading author in the field of general management gives an overview of the principles and foundations that general management is based on. Looking far ahead into the information age, Malik explains the factors for success which can be verified both scientifically and practically. Fredmund Malik's general management theory is system-oriented and therefore valid all over the world at any given time. It works in all areas and industries of any society, irrespective of changing trends, of national or of cultural differences. With his consistent and well-grounded alignment along the natural phenomena of complex systems - phenomena that both executives and managers have to cope with every day - Malik sets the standard for sound management in the era of knowledge. "One of the best management books. It contains wise and exceptional ideas." WirtschaftsWoche

Book Description
Complexity is not a new issue. In fact, in their day, William of Ockham and René Descartes proposed what can best be described as reductionist methods for dealing with it. Over the course of the twentieth century, a science of complexity has emerged in an ever-increasing number of fields (computer science, artificial intelligence, engineering, among others), and has now become an integral part of everyday life. As a result, everyone is confronted with increasingly complex situations that need to be understood and analyzed from a global perspective, to ensure the sustainability of our common future. Complexities 1 analyzes how complexity is understood and dealt with in the fields of cybersecurity, medicine, mathematics and information. This broad spectrum of disciplines shows that all fields of knowledge are challenged by complexity. The following volume, Complexities 2, examines the social sciences and humanities in relation to complexity.

Book Description
The treatise supports understanding the phenomena of complexity in engineering, distinguishes complexity from other challenges and presents an overview of definitions and applied approaches. The historical background of complexity management is explained by highlighting the important epochs, their key actors and their discoveries, findings and developments. Knowing about the appearance of early system awareness in ancient Greece, the creation of mechanical philosophy in the 17th century and the discovery of classic physics enables the reader to better comprehend modern system sciences and management approaches.A classification of complexity management approaches by research fields indicates current focus areas and starting points for future discussions. In a comprehensive map, the classification points out mutual overlaps between engineering disciplines in terms of similar complexity management approaches. Finally, the treatise introduces a generic complexity management framework, which is based on structural management approaches.

Book Description
This book is about complexity in Information Systems (IS). The subject is addressed from both conceptual and applied perspectives. Concepts are drawn from information theory, industrial design and software engineering. Its content capitalizes on experiences gathered by the authors during various contracting jobs involving software architecture, modeling and IS architecture that were conducted for large organizations in the banking and industry sectors, as well as in the public sector. The authors develop the point of view according to which mastering complexity involves two essential steps: first, one should develop a clear understanding of the real nature of complexity within the IS; second, one should identify the primary causes which contribute to its uncontrolled growth and organize these into a logical framework, in order to define efficient countermeasures. Both technical and psychological causes of complexity are to be considered. Two themes make up the main thread of the book: complexity and value. Both themes are quite common when considered separately, but their interplay remains a largely unexplored topic. The analysis of this interplay is one of the sources of originality of this book.
