Book Description
Why do rap MCs present their studio recorded lyrics as “live and direct”? Why do they so insistently define abilities or actions, theirs or someone else’s, against a pre-existing signifier? This book examines the compositional practice of rap lyricists and offers compelling answers to these questions. Through a 40 year-span analysis of the music, it argues that whether through the privileging of chanted call-and-response phrases or through rhetorical strategies meant to assist in getting one’s listening audience open, the focus of the first rap MCs on community building and successful performer-audience cooperation has remained prevalent on rap records with lyrics and production techniques encouraging the listener to become physically and emotionally involved in recorded performances. Relating rap’s rhetorical strategy of posing inferences through intertextuality to early call-and-response routines and crowd-controlling techniques, this study emphasizes how the dynamic and collective elements from the stage performances and battles of the formative years of rap have remained relevant in the creative process behind this music. It contends that the customary use of identifiable references and similes by rap lyricists works as a fluid interchange designed to keep the listener involved in the performance. Like call-and-response in live performances, it involves a dynamic form of communication and places MCs in a position where they activate the shared knowledge of their audience, making sure that they “know what they mean,” thus transforming their mediated lyrics into a collective and engaging performance.

Book Description
Calling All Individuals Determined To Become Magnetic And Irresistibly Persuasive “In-depth book reveals how anyone can become a master of persuasion.” The author swears the methods contained in this book are 100% ethical and legal. “POSSIBLY THE MOST DANGEROUS BOOK ON PERSUASION AND INFLUENCE EVER WRITTEN.” If you want to become the most influential person in the room that people agree with and follow then this will be the most important book you’ll ever read. Here’s why… My name is Ian Tuhovsky and I’ve been studying the complicated world of human relationships and communication for over 11 years. One thing I can tell you is that… People that don’t know how to be influential -end up at the back of the line -last for the promotion -picked last for the team -and forgotten when invites are handed out. I’ve helped tens of thousands of people worldwide transform the way they interact with others and, as a side effect, the way they live their lives. When I started, people thought I was a master manipulator. My family and friends became suspicious. Some even watched “The Mentalist” to learn to protect themselves from my methods. They couldn’t help but notice though that whatever I was doing was not only bringing me success at work and in love but also made our relationships better. So, out of curiosity, they reached for my books and were SHOCKED. They found that the methods I teach are based on science and can help anyone better themselves and their lives. We all strive to be better, happier, healthier and successful. Is it unethical to use these extremely powerful methods to help you get to where you want to be? This book is just a tool. It’s up to you how you use it. You can build a house or murder someone with a hammer. Should hammers be banned? Over 20,352 people have used the tools I hand out to build better relationships, wildly successful careers and more enjoyable lives. Who Needs The Information in This Book? Are you in a job that requires you to communicate with others and get them on board with your ideas? Are you a parent or in a committed relationship and rely on communication to keep things healthy? Are you a business owner and deal with contractors, employees, customers and business partners? If you answered ‘yes’ to any of the above then you need to read “Become a Leader” and immediately start implementing these methods to transform your life, work, and relationships. Book Description
It was as if American television audiences discovered the musical in the early 21st century. In 2009 Glee took the Fox Network and American television by storm with the unexpected unification of primetime programming, awkward teens, and powerful voices spontaneously bursting into song. After raking in the highest rating for a new show in the 2009-2010 season, Glee would continue to cultivate rabid fans, tie-in soundtracks and merchandising, and a spinoff reality competition show until its conclusion in 2015. Alongside Glee, NBC and Fox would crank up musical visibility with the nighttime drama Smash and a string of live musical productions. Then came ABC's comedic fantasy musical series Galavant and the CW's surprise Golden Globe darling Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. Television and the musical appeared to be a perfect match. But, as author Kelly Kessler illustrates, television had at that point been carrying on a sixty-year, symbiotic love affair with the musical. From Rodgers and Hammerstein's appearance on the first Toast of the Town telecast and Mary Martin's iconic Peter Pan airings to Barbra Streisand's 1960s CBS specials, The Carol Burnett Show, Cop Rock, Great Performances, and a string of one-off musical episodes of sitcoms, nighttime soaps, fantasy shows, and soap operas, television has always embraced the musical. Kessler shows how the form is written across the history of American television and how its various incarnations tell the stories of shifting American culture and changing television, film, and theatrical landscapes. She recounts and explores this rich, decades-long history by traversing musicals, stars, and sounds from film, Broadway, and Las Vegas to the small screen.
