Book Description
Excerpt from Maryland Colonization Journal, Vol. 3: January, 1847 The very ground work Of African colonization, from first to last, both among its slavery and anti-slavery supporters, has been, that equality, poli tical or social, between the African and Caucasian race can never exist on this continent, that the lesser, of course the weaker race, must serve or flee. This doctrine, however kindly and judiciously announced, must always to the one party be extremely unpalatable, but when reiterated and enlarged Upon by excited declaimers, with a free application of epithets, not the most flattering to the coloured people, its only effect is to steel their hearts against all that can promise them or their posterity nationality or worldly good - to generate in them the Nolt' me' tangere of a most inveterate character. Book Description
Excerpt from Maryland Colonization Journal, Vol. 3: April, 1847 In our last two preceding numbers, we gave entire, the Introduction to this work, accompanied with some remarks as to its general character. We now propose commencing an outline, or very slight abridgment of the work itself, giving such extracts, as, we conceive ought to be embodied in a Journal of Colonization, and such as we judge will prove most interesting to our readers; occasionally, taking the liberty of commenting upon what we conceive to be erroneous or liable to misapprehension. Book Description
Excerpt from Maryland Colonization Journal, Vol. 3: September, 1846 At the minute of our arrival an orator was addressing, not the assembled multitude, but the dead, reciting the news of the day, encouraging and directing him in his journey, praising his virtues, Ste. 8m. At the close of the address, two men bore him away with a quick step, followed by the multitude, weeping, wailing, clattering of horns, and gree grees; and firing of guns. Book Description
Excerpt from Maryland Colonization Journal, Vol. 3: June, 1846 The best road that I have seen in Africa is that extending from Harper to Mount Tubman, a distance of more than three miles. It is not a small path, but a well-beaten wagon road. On riding out to Mount Vaughan, I met an oxcart, filled with rice. Two small oxen and two donkeys were attached to the cart. This was the first thing of the kind that I have seen in this country. There are several small riding horses in the Colony, and several donkeys. Book Description
Excerpt from Maryland Colonization Journal, Vol. 3: October, 1845 And again, can we doubt for a moment that a man, who was mean enough to try and bribe my mate to tell a lie, in order to exonerate him from a difficulty in which, after he had got sober, he found his ambition had led him, would, when he found the vessel in his own hands, and no one to inform on him, do any and every thing to effect her condemnation this is too evident to admit of a doubt.
