Book Description
A discussion of pop culture messages about masculinity, their impact on boys, and the benefits of introducing more gender balance to boys lives. When most people think about gender stereotypes and children, they envision princesses, dolls, and pink clothing. Few consider the warriors, muscle-bound action figures, and T-shirts covered in graffiti and skulls that are assumed to signify masculinity. The pop culture environment that surrounds boys introduces them to a world where traditionally masculine traitslike toughness, aggression, and stoicismare highly esteemed and where female influence is all but absent. The Achilles Effect explores gender bias in the entertainment aimed at primary school boys, focusing on the dominant themes in childrens TV shows, toy advertising, movies, and books: gender stereotypes of both sexes, male dominance, negative portrayals of fathers, breaking of the mother/son bond, and the devaluing of femininity. It examines the gender messages sent by pop culture, provides strategies for countering these messages, and encourages discussion of a vitally important issue that is rarely talked aboutboys and their often skewed understanding of gender. The Achilles Effect is a guide for parents, educators, and students who want to learn more about male and female stereotypes, their continued strong presence in kids pop culture, and their effect on young boys.

Book Description
All species, extant and extinct, from the simplest unicellular prokaryotes to humans, have an existential consciousness. Without sentience, the first cells that emerged some 4 billion years ago would have been evolutionary dead-ends, unable to survive in the chaotic, dangerous environment in which life first appeared and evolved. In this book, Arthur Reber's theory, the Cellular Basis of Consciousness (CBC), is outlined and distinguished from those models that argue that minds could be instantiated on artificial entities and those that maintain consciousness requires a nervous system. The CBC framework takes a novel approach to classic topics such as the origin-of-life, philosophy of mind, the role of genes, the impact of cognition, and how biological information is processed by all species. It also calls for a rethinking of a variety of issues including the moral implications of the sentient capacities of all species, how welfare concerns need to be expanded beyond where they currently are, and critically, how all life is intertwined in a coordinated cognitive ecology. The Sentient Cell explores this revolutionary model, which updates the standard neo-Darwinian framework within which current approaches operate and examines the underlying biomolecular features that are the likely candidates for the "invention" of consciousness and outline their role in cellular life.

Book Description
This encyclopedia uniquely concentrates on biocolloids and biointerfaces rather than the broader field of colloid and interface science. Biocolloids and biointerfaces are the youngest but increasingly prominent studied area of colloid and interface science, and this encyclopedia uses "soft particles" and "soft interface" as surface models in observing phenomena in biological systems. Provides a detailed description of the fundamental theories, dealing with the physicochemical and theoretical aspects of biocolloid and biointerface science Offers a detailed description of soft interfaces or surfaces Includes detailed description of applications of fundamental biocolloid and biointerface theories to nano-, bio, and environmental sciences A useful and timely resource for researchers and graduates in the field of biocolloid and biointerface science, as well as engineers in the field of nanotechnology, bioscience, and environmental science.
