Marguerite Yourcenar is best known as the author of the 1951 novel Mémoires d’Hadrien, her recreation of the life of the Roman emperor Hadrian. Yourcenar, Marguerite, femme libre, romancière et essayiste, a cherché à connaître les divers visages de l'homme, de la vie et des choses. Elle réalisa un œuvre littéraire composé de romans, de pièces de théâtre, de nouvelles, de mémoires, de poésies et d'essais. Son premier livre, Alexis ou le Traité du vain combat, paraît en 1929. Après une jeunesse consacrée à l'écriture et à des voyages en Europe, surtout l'Italie et la Grèce, elle s'exile au Etats-Unis en 1939.C'est dans l'île des Monts Déserts de l'état du Maine, où elle réside avec sa compagne, qu'elle rédige Les Mémoires d'Hadrien. Ce roman historique, paru en 1951, lui permet d'obtenir une reconnaissance internationale. Après la publication de L'oeuvre au noir en 1968, elle est élue à l'Académie royale de Belgique en 1970 et à l'Académie française en 1980. Elle est la première femme à y être reçue.
