Extremist Shiites
Author: Matti Moosa
Publisher: Syracuse University Press
ISBN: 9780815624110
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 614
Book Description
Little is known in the West about the division of the Islamic world into Shiites and Sunnites and even less about the stratification of these two groups, with most of the attention going to the Sunnites. Moosa's comprehensive study of the origins and cultural aspects of the different extremist, or Ghulat, Shiite sects in the Middle East is a ground-breaking work. These sects whose 'extremism' is essentially religious are generally a peaceful people and, except for the Nusayris of Syria, are not political activists.

Shiʿism
Author: Seyyed Hossein Nasr
Publisher: State University of New York Press
ISBN: 1438414277
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 424
Book Description
This is an anthology of the most significant writing on the doctrinal, intellectual, and spiritual dimensions of Shicism. The works included here foster an interpretive understanding of Shicism in its dogmatic and cognitive aspects. The intent of this book is to balance the attention that has been focused on the political aspect of Shicism. Shicism is often seen, not only as an essentially political phenomenon, but as a creed of violence. Understanding Shicism in its total reality will encourage a more balanced approach to issues which are viewed mostly politically. While not denying the importance of political manifestations, this book offers an understanding of the often neglected religious beliefs and spiritual practices of this world community.

Book Description
The Translator’s Preface Among the religious traditions of mankind the Shi‘ah tradition within Islam is unmatched in its rich corpus of devotional texts (duc¡ and ziy¡rah literature) handed down from the original teachers and leaders of the faith, the Prophet Mu¦ammad and the Imams of his family, the Ahl al-Bayt. This tradition begins with the Qur’¡n—its opening s£rah being an essential part of the Muslim ritual prayer (that is, ¥al¡h, as opposed to duc¡ in the sense of supplication and petition-ary texts)—which, besides citing many prayers made by the former prophets, beginning with Adam, suggests several supplications for the devout. In accordance with the Qur’¡nic teaching, Islam views itself not as a novel and insular phenomenon in the religious history of mankind, but as the culmi-nating link in a prophetic chain that began with Adam, the first man and recipi-ent of Divine revelations, and, after a cataclysmic phase marked by the ministry of Noah, which signified the end of an era and beginning of a new, culminated in the figure of Abraham, whom the Qur’¡n describes as a follower of Noah...

Conversion to Islam
Author: Ayman S. Ibrahim
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0197530737
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 291
Book Description
Why did non-Muslims convert to Islam during Muhammad's life and under his immediate successors? How did Muslim historians portray these conversions? Why did their portrayals differ significantly? To what extent were their portrayals influenced by their time of writing, religious inclinations, and political affiliations? These are the fundamental questions that drive this study. Relying on numerous works, including primary sources from over a hundred classical Muslim historians, Conversion to Islam is the first scholarly study to detect, trace, and analyze conversion themes in early Muslim historiography, emphasizing how classical Muslims remembered conversion, and how they valued and evaluated aspects of it. Ayman S. Ibrahim examines numerous early Muslim sources and wrestles with critical observations regarding the sources' reliability and unearths the hidden link between historical narratives and historians' religious sympathies and political agendas. This study leads readers through a complex body of literature, provides insights regarding historical context, and creates a vivid picture of conversion to Islam as early Muslim historians sought to depict it.

Surviving the Mongols
Author: Nadia Eboo Jamal
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 0857717189
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 209
Book Description
The Mongol invasion of Iran in the thirteenth century was a catastrophe for all its inhabitants. For the Persian Ismailis in particular, it put an end to their political aspirations and independent existence for many centuries. It has been held by many historians that subsequent to the fall of the central Ismaili fortress of Alamut to the Mongols, the community was virtually extirpated from the region and its institutional network dismantled until its revival in the sixteenth century under the Safavid dynasty. Such an expansive view of post-Alamut Ismailism is questioned by this study which examines the poetic writings of Nizari Quhistani, one of the few Ismaili authors who survived the Mongol invasion and whose works are accessible today. The evidence of Nizari's writings demonstrate that while the Ismaili community was seriously impaired, its organizational structure and internal coherence continued to operate in different forms through the Mongol period of Persian history.
