Book Description
Maple Shade's history spans more than three centuries, starting when John and Sarah Roberts arrived from Burlington, New Jersey, in 1682. The settlement became more permanent in 1794 when Main Street was constructed, allowing a connection to the King's Highway and to the Cooper River ferry. In 1811, property was set aside for the Chesterford School, also known as the "Little Red Schoolhouse." In 1867, the township gained an identity with a train station and a rail stop. Formerly known as Chester Township, the town was now called Maple Shade. Along with the railroad came various industries and businesses, several shops, a post office, and an active brick-making business. Maple Shade gradually changed from a rural community to a suburban town. Today many of these early settlers are still known through street names: Robert Stiles, Samuel Coles, Alexander Mecray, and the Rudderows were all early settlers of Maple Shade.

Book Description
Maple Shade Historical Society- 100th Anniversary of the Maple Shade Progress newspaper book, William F. Brown started a newspaper at his home at 537 Cutler Avenue, one hundred years ago, in November of 1916. Maple Shade, Lenola, and Moorestown were then together in a large town named Chester Township which dated back to the late 1600s. The newspaper was called the "Maple Shade Progress" and stated that "the progress of Maple Shade was its aim." This meant more street lights, better roads, and most importantly to be hooked up to the Moorestown Water Works. It was no mistake that the first issue was printed just before the November election to elect Township Committee members. A local, Theodore Sauselein, was running! Soon the news was out- Moorestown wanted a divorce! It finally gave itself one in 1922, but failed to separate in a 1917 election. This book contains scans of William F. Brown's Maple Shade Progress newspaper which he published from November 4, 1916 to August 31, 1917. It also contains the first two complete issues, as well as many front pages of issues, published by Frank E. Gerkens Sr. who took over ownership of the paper in September of 1917. Frank Gerkens Sr. and then, his son, Frank Gerkens Jr., ran the newspaper for over seventy years. The Progress was then bought by a newsgroup (lastly The Journal Register Company owners of The Central Record) which published its last issue on February 3, 2012. The scans of these first Progress newspapers contained in this book are from two sources, which are both owned by the Maple Shade Historical Society. The first batch they had for many years and the second was given to them recently in 2013 by Norma G. Hunter, daughter of Frank E. and Jennie Gerkens Jr. She said that it was her father's wish that those copies of the Maple Shade Progress be given to the Maple Shade Historical Society. Together the two batches complement each other filling in where the other is missing issues. The latter contains Frank Gerkens Sr.'s first newspapers. This is a great privilege to look into a period of time in Maple Shade's past when it was starting to develop into more than they at that time dared to become- a Township. What's the book about?-It is about today we might complain that the air conditioner isn't cold enough in the summer, but in 1916-1917 you had oyster shells being spread on mud roads! It is about Lenola toying with the idea of its boundaries and becoming a Borough yet going with Moorestown. It is about the Political tension between Moorestown and Maple Shade. It is about World War One and Maple Shade's Home Guard. There are few stores and two are General Stores. Arthur Tippett Christ Free Church is going strong. A bungalow here and there are always being built. Someone is selling a cow, or chickens, or honey. The School only goes to the 4th grade here. Many Canning recipes! etc... All proceeds from the sales of this book benefit the Maple Shade Historical Society.-Dennis Lee Weaver
