Book Description
Excerpt from Manual of Business Correspondence and English Of grammar, the essential parts, it not the whole, are etymology and syntax. For orthography relates to the mere arrangement of letters for the arbitrary representation of certain sounds, and prosody to the aesthe tic use of language. And, if prosody is a part of grammar, why should the latter not include rhetoric, and even elocution In fact, grammar was long regarded as including all that concerns the structure and the relations Of language and a grammarian among the ancients was one who was versed, not only in language, but in poetry, history, and rhe toric, and who, generally, lectured or wrote upon those branches of literature. But it seems to me that in the usage of intelligent people the English word grammar relates only to the laws which govern the significant forms of words, and the construction Of the sentence. Thus, if we find extraordinary spelled igstrammg, or hear suggest pronounced saiieet, we do not call these lapses false grammar; but it we hear, She was him, but he wasn't hem, which violates true etymology, or, He done it good, which is incorrect syntax, these we do call false grammar. Etymology, which relates to the significant forms of words, and syntax, the rules of which govern their arrangement, are, then, from our point of view, the great essentials, if not the whole, of grammar. - R. Book Description
Excerpt from Hand-Book of Modern Business Correspondence He looked upon letter-writing as one of the most important parts of his work, having a strong and direct influence upon the success of his undertakings. Delegating the work of correspondence to a sub ordinate was practically foreign to his mind. In this part of business routine he was not content merely to suggest and dictate; he clung tenaciously, jealously, to the discharge of details by his own hand. Book Description
Excerpt from Business Correspondence: Correspondence English, Business Letter Writing Customs, Files and Systems, Writing Effective Business Letters The business man who sees the sure result of a satisfactorily-handled letter naturally wants to know how it is done. Many books are in existence which give a great deal of information about certain essentials of letter-writing, but there has always seemed to be lacking in most of these works the specific directions which a broad business man needs to produce a well written letter. It is not to be supposed that the more common details and essentials need be given much space, for that is not what is demanded. Rather, about the essen tiale should be grouped such facts as experience has taught those who are in touch with business conditions are the broad truths, the large views of this important science. This, indeed, is the aim of the entire Business Men's Library, of which this is the second volume. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
