Book Description
The long-awaited cookbook by one of the San Francisco Bay Area's star chefs, David Kinch, who has revolutionized restaurant culture with his take on the farm-to-table ethic and focus on the terroir of the Northern California coast. Since opening Manresa in Los Gatos in 2002, award-winning Chef David Kinch has done more to create a sense of place through his food—specifically where the Santa Cruz Mountains meet the sea—than any other chef on the West Coast. Manresa’s thought-provoking dishes and unconventional pairings draw on techniques both traditional and modern that combine with the heart of the Manresa experience: fruits and vegetables. Through a pioneering collaboration between farm and restaurant, nearby Love Apple Farms supplies nearly all of the restaurant’s exquisite produce year round. Kinch's interpretation of these ingredients, drawing on his 30 years in restaurants as well as his far-flung and well-fed travels, are at the heart of the Manresa experience. In Manresa, Chef Kinch details his thoughts on building a dish: the creativity, experimentation and emotion that go into developing each plate and daily menu—and how a tasting menu ultimately tells a deeper story. A literary snapshot of the restaurant, from Chef Kinch's inspirations to his techniques, Manresa is an ode to the mountains, fields, and sea; it shares the philosophies and passions of a brilliant chef whose restaurant draws its inspiration globally, while always keeping a profound connection to the people, producers, and bounty of the land that surrounds it.

Book Description
In 1911, Rev. Terence Shealy purchased the Meyer estate on Staten Island. With magnificent views of the New York Harbor, the estate was a dream come true for Father Shealy. He was at the forefront of the lay retreat movement in the United States, and the Meyer estate was the perfect refuge for men to escape from the stress of everyday life. Judges and bricklayers came together to meditate and enjoy the beauty of this hilltop in rural Staten Island. The lay retreat movement grew and spread across the United States, with thousands coming to Mount Manresa. The house also had a strong relationship with Fordham University. The first retreat took place at Rose Hill campus, and three former Fordham presidents became directors of Mount Manresa after they left their posts in academia. Today Mount Manresa plays host to a multitude of retreats throughout the year, bringing more than 15,000 guests to the campus annually.

Book Description
High on a hill in Northwest Washington, overlooking the Key City of Port Townsend, lies Manresa Castle. Built in 1892 by area pioneer Charles Eisenbeis, the former home and later a Jesuit seminary served as a community landmark for over eighty years, but, by 1973, was badly in need of restoration; however, neither banks nor local investors would grant the owners loans for improvements. Saving Manresa Castle takes you on a journey that reveals how Ronald Smith left his high-tech position in Silicon Valley, purchased the Castle, and, with his family, spent sixteen years (1973""1989) overcoming major obstacles to create a unique and now famous guest inn. Since that time, thousands of guests have come and gone, taking with them unforgettable memories of one of Northwest Washington's most popular vacation venues. Here, Ron Smith tells his version of stories about the widely publicized ghosts of Manresa Castle in which the Smith family lived, full time, for many years. He shares information about the ghost of the Jesuit priest who supposedly committed suicide by hanging himself in the attic turret. He also tells how he and his wife, Carol, lived in the very suite where Kate, a guest at the castle toward the end of the nineteenth century, purportedly committed suicide by jumping out of the third-floor bedroom window. As you begin reading Saving Manresa Castle, prepare to enjoy never-before-published stories and photographs that will give you insight into the restoration of a fabled landmark. Ron and his family hope you enjoy this virtual tour of Manresa Castle.

Book Description
This book is about a walk on the Camino Ignacio in Spain, that ended in failure through injury that ironically illustrates key aspects of Ignatian Spirituality. Ignatius himself was a ‘wounded’ soldier and limped his way across Spain as he managed to turn apparent failure into a great conversion to Christ. Ignatius’ injury revealed that God had a better plan for him and letting go of control paradoxically allowed God in. This book illustrates that same dynamic: an unexpected injury that throws everything up in the air, the struggle to let go of plans and expectations, trying to discern in difficult situations with incomplete information. It is a roadmap for those seeking to make sense of failure and reinterpret it in God’s eyes that allows for new life and meaning. The fact that this walk takes in key Ignatian sites such as Loyola, Naverette and Manresa, gives even more insight into Ignatius’ experience as a limping pilgrim. Readers will find here a concrete ‘spirituality of real-life’, that helps with decision making, dealing with suffering, facing failure, perseverance, surrendering to life and making the best out of difficult situations. Those dealing with failure, disability or injury will find a message of hope and consolation to deal with hopelessness and depression.

Book Description
A dedicated Jesuit priest struggles to understand the decline of the Society of Jesus and turns to former students for guidance in this intriguing novel. Retreat from Manresa: a Jesuit Story At the heart of the modern decline in the influence of the Catholic Church is the story of the decline in numbers and influence of the Jesuits. This book is a fictional account of the internal conditions that have led to the decline of this once great religious order. The history of the Society of Jesus, Jesuits, begins at Manresa in Spain where the founder, St Ignatius Loyola, prayed and wrote the Spiritual Exercises which became the core of the orders unique spirituality and which every Jesuit was required to make twice in his long thirteen-year formation, once at the beginning in the novitiate and at the end in tertianship. Once known as the black popes with a special vow of obedience to the pontiff, the Jesuits have since fallen into the ranks of the unofficial opposition to the recent popes, especially Pope John Paul II. Through a fictional account of the lives of four principal characters, Retreat from Manresa tells the story of this transformation of the Jesuit order. Unlike several other such novels, however, this one is not written out of a well of bitterness; it is, on the contrary, written from a large reservoir of affection. An affection, however, tinged with a deep sadness.
