Book Description
Not Just Music─The Enduring Legacy of Goth Dive deep into the tumultuous era of Margaret Thatcher’s 1980s England and the profound impact of goth on a generation of alienated youths Goth's emergence defied a political era. As Margaret Thatcher's iron grip tightened around Britain, catalyzed by events like the miners' strikes and the rise of privatization, an unexpected counter-culture began to take root. Bands like Siouxsie and the Banshees and Joy Division, offspring of punk's raw energy, found a way to articulate the disillusionment of the times. Through their evocative sounds and iconography, they ushered in a musical movement that mirrored the societal shifts. Politics and music find an unusual nexus. The story of goth isn't merely a tale of alienated youths or atmospheric tunes. It’s a narrative deeply intertwined with the Yorkshire Ripper's horrors, Sid Vicious's tragedy, and the societal upheavals heralded by Margaret Thatcher, the Iron Lady. Author Cathi Unsworth paints a vivid tapestry, demonstrating how goth became more than just music—it became a reflection of an era's ethos and spirit. Inside, you'll discover: Deep Political Resonance: How goth's dark melodies interlaced with the Thatcher era, the miners' strikes, and privatization. Goth's Global Footprint: The journey from punk's downfall, marked by Sid Vicious, to the international acclaim of bands like Siouxsie and the Banshees. Enduring Cultural Impact: An examination of goth's lasting legacy amidst alienated youths and Britain's counter-culture movement. Historical Synchronicity: The parallel narrative of the Yorkshire Ripper's reign and goth's rise during Britain's most tumultuous times. If you have read books like The Art of Darkness, Faith Hope and Carnage, Into the Void, or Goth by Lol Tolhurst, you’ll love Season of the Witch.

Book Description
Truth, etc. is a wide-ranging study of ancient logic based upon the John Locke lectures given by the eminent philosopher Jonathan Barnes in Oxford. Its six chapters discuss, first, certain ancient ideas about truth; secondly, the Aristotelian conception of predication; thirdly, various ideas about connectors which were developed by the ancient logicians and grammarians; fourthly, the notion of logical form, insofar as it may be discovered in the ancient texts; fifthly, the question of the 'justification of deduction'; and sixthly, the attitude which has been called logical utilitarianism and which restricts the scope of logic to those forms of inference which are or might be useful for scientific proofs. In principle, the book presupposes no knowledge of logic and no skill in ancient languages: all ancient texts are cited in English translation; and logical symbols and logical jargon are avoided so far as possible. There is no scholarly apparatus of footnotes, and no bibliography. It can be read in an armchair. Anyone interested in ancient philosophy, or in logic and its history, will find it interesting.

Book Description
Rain is elemental, mysterious, precious, destructive. It is the subject of countless poems and paintings; the top of the weather report; the source of the world's water. Yet this is the first book to tell the story of rain. Cynthia Barnett's Rain begins four billion years ago with the torrents that filled the oceans, and builds to the storms of climate change. It weaves together science—the true shape of a raindrop, the mysteries of frog and fish rains—with the human story of our ambition to control rain, from ancient rain dances to the 2,203 miles of levees that attempt to straitjacket the Mississippi River. It offers a glimpse of our "founding forecaster," Thomas Jefferson, who measured every drizzle long before modern meteorology. Two centuries later, rainy skies would help inspire Morrissey’s mopes and Kurt Cobain’s grunge. Rain is also a travelogue, taking readers to Scotland to tell the surprising story of the mackintosh raincoat, and to India, where villagers extract the scent of rain from the monsoon-drenched earth and turn it into perfume. Now, after thousands of years spent praying for rain or worshiping it; burning witches at the stake to stop rain or sacrificing small children to bring it; mocking rain with irrigated agriculture and cities built in floodplains; even trying to blast rain out of the sky with mortars meant for war, humanity has finally managed to change the rain. Only not in ways we intended. As climate change upends rainfall patterns and unleashes increasingly severe storms and drought, Barnett shows rain to be a unifying force in a fractured world. Too much and not nearly enough, rain is a conversation we share, and this is a book for everyone who has ever experienced it.

Book Description
Are you saying one thing whilst your hands reveal another? Are you influenced by other people's body language without even knowing it? Darting through examples found anywhere from the controlled psychology laboratory to modern advertising and the Big Brother TV phenomenon, official Big Brother psychologist Geoffrey Beattie takes on the issue of what our everyday gestures mean and how they affect our relationships with other people. For a long time psychologists have misunderstood body language as an emotional nonverbal side effect. In this book Geoffrey Beattie ranges across the history of communication from Cicero to Chomsky to demonstrate that by adding to or even contradicting what we say, gestures literally make our true thoughts visible. A unique blend of popular examples and scientific research presented in language that everybody can understand, Visible Thought is an accessible and groundbreaking text that will appeal to those interested in social psychology and anyone who wants to delve beneath the surface of human interaction. Geoffrey Beattie is the official Big Brother psychologist and Professor at the Department of Psychology, University of Manchester. He is a recipient of the Spearman Medal awarded by the British Psychological Society for 'published psychological work of outstanding merit'.
