Book Description
Yucatán's Magic-Mérida Side Trips: Treasures of Mayab (updated 2013), looks beyond the obvious popular tourist attractions, the luxury coastal resorts, and the modern conveniences of big cities, to discover the unique Yucatán.From the Puuc hills to the extensive coast of Yucatán there are thousands of kilometers of paved quiet roads through countless Mayan villages interspersed with colonial haciendas, and ancient Mayan ruins, all there just waiting for your visit. This is photo-op and bird watching country that is the very finest this planet has to offer.Over a quarter of a century of driving, busing, and cycling this unique end of the world, while living in Mérida, Yucatán, Mexico, led the author to compile an impressive collection of outings that are the foundation for this book, built one story at a time. For the armchair traveler and people that have been to Yucatán before and think that they have done everything, Yucatán's Magic-Mérida Side Trips will open the door to another side of life not presented in tours or guided excursions. This isn't just a guide book but an idea book. It is something of another element to give you direction with your guide books like Lonely Planet or Moon Guide. The book is not made to compete with guidebooks-it is made to complement them. In the book you will find the author's favorite travel adventure trips of the places, excursions and outings, which he likes for different reasons. Among them; tranquility, history, a view of picturesque villages, a connection with the ancient Maya, changing landscape, and a look at another aspect of life, which will take you out of the mainstream and off the beaten path. Many of the excursions have been by bicycle and bus. Bicycle and bus excursions in Yucatán are by far the most inexpensive you will ever take and can be the most rewarding in not only health benefits but also in memorable experiences. For an adventure that takes you out of the mainstream to explore some of this peaceful, and fascinating world, follow in the author's path to the places without trinket shops and tour buses.Take a glimpse at some of Yucatán that tourists miss most!

Book Description
Approaching sorcery as highly rational and rooted in significant social and cultural values, Sorcery in Mesoamerica examines and reconstructs the original indigenous logic behind it, analyzing manifestations from the Classic Maya to the ethnographic present. While the topic of sorcery and witchcraft in anthropology is well developed in other areas of the world, it has received little academic attention in Mexico and Central America until now. In each chapter, preeminent scholars of ritual and belief ask very different questions about what exactly sorcery is in Mesoamerica. Contributors consider linguistic and visual aspects of sorcery and witchcraft, such as the terminology in Aztec semantics and dictionaries of the Kaqchiquel and K’iche’ Maya. Others explore the practice of sorcery and witchcraft, including the incorporation by indigenous sorcerers in the Mexican highlands of European perspectives and practices into their belief system. Contributors also examine specific deities, entities, and phenomena, such as the pantheistic Nahua spirit entities called forth to assist healers and rain makers, the categorization of Classic Maya Wahy (“co-essence”) beings, the cult of the Aztec goddess Cihuacoatl, and the recurring relationship between female genitalia and the magical conjuring of a centipede throughout Mesoamerica. Placing the Mesoamerican people in a human context—as engaged in a rational and logical system of behavior—Sorcery inMesoamerica is the first comprehensive study of the subject and an invaluable resource for students and scholars of Mesoamerican culture and religion. Contributors: Lilián González Chévez, John F. Chuchiak IV, Jeremy D. Coltman, Roberto Martínez González, Oswaldo Chinchilla Mazariegos, Cecelia F. Klein, Timothy J. Knab, John Monaghan, Jesper Nielsen, John M. D. Pohl, Alan R. Sandstrom, Pamela Effrein Sandstrom, David Stuart

Book Description
This is an extensive introduction to this area of Mexico, extracted from our much larger Adventure Guide to the Yucatan. Experience the places you visit more directly, freshly, intensely than you would otherwise -sometimes best done on foot, in a canoe, or through cultural adventures like art courses, cooking classes, learning the language, meeting the people, joining in the festivals and celebrations. This can make your trip life-changing, unforgettable. All of the detailed information you need is here about the hotels, restaurants, shopping, sightseeing. But we also lead you to new discoveries, turning corners you haven't turned before, helping you to interact with the world in new ways. That's what makes our Adventure Guides unique. "Latest edition of a highly-recommended guidebook to this fascinating corner of Mexico, a region which the authors describe as "a big hitch-hiking thumb." Their interest and hard work has paid off in both editions. The book is loaded with hotel and transportation info, great maps and interesting art work. Eco travelers will love this guidebook. The author provides full details on kayaking, hiking, rappelling, and camping in the region. She also features more out-of-the-way attractions such as natural cenotes, ancient ruins and colonial towns. Of special note -- this is the first guidebook to feature a section on colonial era hacienda hotels, including both luxurious hotels and working haciendas where readers can experience authentic Yucatecan living in fine accommodations that are also economically priced. Indigenous artists in Maya villages are also profiled. As if all this weren't enough, the second edition includes a "Top 20" feature of things to do and see in the Yucatan. By far, this is the most comprehensive guidebook to the region." -- Planeta.com Journal "Comparing your book to Lonely Planet's - your book won hands down on every level. It was AWESOME!" -- Erika Holm "Profiles 49 Maya destinations, excellent trip planning hints, detailed maps and advice from health precautions to getting around." -- Anton Newspapers "Your Yucatan guide is great.....Keep up the good work." -- Bill Bell "I am the author of the thriller/adventure "A Tourist in the Yucatan" and I recently reviewed "Adventures Guide to the Yucatan." In my opinion, this is a "must have" book for the adventure minded traveler! The authors has done an excellent job in putting together the ultimate adventure guide book to the Yucatan. For many travelers, a trip to the Yucatan means mostly sitting on the beach soaking in the sun. The typical tourist only sees a small fraction of what this fascinating section of Mexico has to offer. Inland are ancient Mayan ruins hidden in the jungle and colonial cities that date back to the 1500's. Available activities are diverse from scuba diving on tropical reefs or into cenotes or caves to kayaking, camping, or just getting off the beaten track and meeting the "REAL PEOPLE." This book does a great job of outlining all the possibilities available in a straight forward and easy to read style. The introduction section should be very helpful to the first time traveler and there are lots of maps to help you find your way." -- James Brunfeld This book offers tons of recommendations for everything from tour operators to restaurants to hotels in every price budget. All are based on first-hand experience from authors who know the Yucatan intimately. Comprehensive background information - history, culture, geography and climate - gives you a solid knowledge of each destination and its people. Regional chapters take you on an introductory tour, with stops at museums, historic sites and local attractions. Places to stay and eat; transportation to, from and around your destination; practical concerns; tourism contacts - it's all here! Detailed regional and town maps feature walking and driving tours. Then come the adventures - fishing, canoeing, hiking, rafting, llama trips and more.

Book Description
Within the chronological framework of Implantation, Maturation and Transition, this book provides the history of European expansion in the Americas from the age of Columbus through the abolition of slavery. Suggesting a shift in the traditional units of analysis away from nationally defined boundaries, this volume considers all of the Americas - and Africa - to encourage students to see the larger interimperial issues which governed behaviour in both the new world and the old. It also provides students with a mechanism for viewing interimperial rivalries from the largest possible perspective, by focusing, not only on commercial and demographic history and military and economic interaction between metropolitan regions and their colonies, but on the interdependence of European, African, and Amerindian peoples and culture.
