Book Description
Today, ophthalmic pathology deals more and more with pathogenesis using highly sophisticated techniques. In recent decades, it has ex panded to such an extent that it now fills several volumes of a modern comprehensive atlas or textbook. Black and white prints of the macroscopic appearance of dissected eyes are standard in modern textbooks. Color photographs, although providing more visual infor mation and a better insight into the sometimes complex disease pro cesses of the eye, are however costly. Nevertheless, many ophthalmo logic colleagues expressed their desire to have me prepare such an atlas. It is not intended to replace one of the textbooks in this field but rather to supplement existing texts and to stimulate clinical and diagnostic thinking. Hence it should be used in conjunction with textbooks on anatomy and ocular pathology. The reader will find references on the different subjects in the excellent modern textbooks listed below. Diagnosis and treatment in ophthalmology is to a great extent based on morphologic examination. Clinical ophthalmologists have available such excellent tools as the slit-lamp, the gonioscope, and the ophthalmoscope to study and document ocular disease in vivo under high magnification. Both external eye structures and transpar ent ocular structures can be observed better in vivo than in the pathol ogy laboratory. Therefore the pathology of these is only presented in conditions in which direct visualization is normally difficult.

Pathology of the Eye

Languages : en
Pages : 1025
Book Description
It is indeed a pleasure to write a foreword for this spectacular book which represents a landmark in the history of ocular pathology. Not since the three volumes of the Henke-Lubarsch handbook appeared forty years ago has anything like this come on the market. This book represents a compre hensive, thorough and up-to-date clinically oriented textbook on ocular pathology. We are all indebted to the senior author, who is now professor of ophthal mology at the University of Erlangen, who presents us here with the fruit of decades of industrious endeavors. We also have to be grateful to the American ophthalmic pathologist, Dr. David Apple, who, as one of the main collaborators of the German edition, has now provided us with the English translation. The book has a twofold purpose: First, it is meant to be a source of instruction for ophthalmologists and pathologists. For that purpose it is beautifully illustrated both by clinical pictures and by excellent photomicro graphs and electromicroscopic pictures. Most valuable from a didactic point of view are the colored schematic drawings and the many tables. These two features are practically unique and should help any neophyte in grasp ing the principles of ocular pathology.

Tumors of the Eye and Ocular Adnexa
Author: Ramon L. Font
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 368
Book Description
When a specimen representing a tumour or tumour-like lesion of the eye or ocular adnexa is received in most general surgical pathology laboratories, the immediate reaction is one of panic, because these tumours are rarely encountered and often require complex gross dissections based on a knowledge of ocular anatomy that most general surgical pathologists have either never possessed or have long since forgotten. The authors of this volume state that their main objective is to emphasise the important features of these lesions that are of special interest to general and surgical pathologists. In addition to providing complete descriptions of the tumours and tumour-like lesions in the various compartments of the eye and ocular adnexa, the authors correlate the pathologic features with epidemiologic and pathogenetic observations, clinical features, differential diagnosis, and special studies including immunohistochemistry and various molecular approaches. Each anatomic site has a section on normal anatomy and histology and there is a separate chapter on the pathologic examination of ocular specimens so that the general pathologist can approach these uncommonly-encountered specimens with confidence. Because of its scholarly, practical, well illustrated and well-referenced approach, this work will appeal to pathologists and ophthalmologists alike.

Rabies
Author: Alan C. Jackson
Publisher: Academic Press
ISBN: 0080550096
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 681
Book Description
Rabies is the most current and comprehensive account of one of the oldest diseases known that remains a significant public health threat despite the efforts of many who have endeavored to control it in wildlife and domestic animals. During the past five years since publication of the first edition there have been new developments in many areas on the rabies landscape. This edition takes on a more global perspective with many new authors offering fresh outlooks on each topic. Clinical features of rabies in humans and animals are discussed as well as basic science aspects, molecular biology, pathology, and pathogenesis of this disease. Current methods used in defining geographic origins and animal species infected in wildlife are presented, along with diagnostic methods for identifying the strain of virus based on its genomic sequence and antigenic structure. This multidisciplinary account is essential for clinicians as well as public health advisors, epidemiologists, wildlife biologists, and research scientists wanting to know more about the virus and the disease it causes. - Offers a unique global perspective on rabies where dog rabies is responsible for killing more people than yellow - More than 7 million people are potentially exposed to the virus annually and about 50,000 people, half of them children, die of rabies each year - New edition includes greatly expanded coverage of bat rabies which is now the most prominent source of human rabies in the New World and Western Europe, where dog rabies has been controlled - Recent successes of controlling wildlife rabies with an emphasis on prevention is discussed - Approximately 40% updated material incorporates recent knowledge on new approaches to therapy of human rabies as well as issues involving organ and tissue transplantation - Includes an increase in illustrations to more accurately represent this diseases' unique horror
