Book Description
As biological diversity continues to shrink at an alarming rate, the loss of plant species poses a threat seemingly less visible than the loss of animals but in many ways more critical. In this book, one of America's leading ethnobotanists warns about our loss of natural vegetation and plant diversity while providing insights into traditional Native agricultural practices in the Americas. Gary Paul Nabhan here reveals the rich diversity of plants found in tropical forests and their contribution to modern crops, then tells how this diversity is being lost to agriculture and lumbering. He then relates "local parables" of Native American agriculture—from wild rice in the Great Lakes region to wild gourds in Florida—that convey the urgency of this situation and demonstrate the need for saving the seeds of endangered plants. Nabhan stresses the need for maintaining a wide gene pool, not only for the survival of these species but also for the preservation of genetic strains that can help scientists breed more resilient varieties of other plants. Enduring Seeds is a book that no one concerned with our environment can afford to ignore. It clearly shows us that, as agribusiness increasingly limits the food on our table, a richer harvest can be had by preserving ancient ways. This edition features a new foreword by Miguel Altieri, one of today's leading spokesmen for sustainable agriculture and the preservation of indigenous farming methods.

Book Description
A haunting novel spanning several generations, The Seed Keeper follows a Dakhóta family’s struggle to preserve their way of life, and their sacrifices to protect what matters most. Rosalie Iron Wing has grown up in the woods with her father, Ray, a former science teacher who tells her stories of plants, of the stars, of the origins of the Dakhóta people. Until, one morning, Ray doesn’t return from checking his traps. Told she has no family, Rosalie is sent to live with a foster family in nearby Mankato—where the reserved, bookish teenager meets rebellious Gaby Makespeace, in a friendship that transcends the damaged legacies they’ve inherited. On a winter’s day many years later, Rosalie returns to her childhood home. A widow and mother, she has spent the previous two decades on her white husband’s farm, finding solace in her garden even as the farm is threatened first by drought and then by a predatory chemical company. Now, grieving, Rosalie begins to confront the past, on a search for family, identity, and a community where she can finally belong. In the process, she learns what it means to be descended from women with souls of iron—women who have protected their families, their traditions, and a precious cache of seeds through generations of hardship and loss, through war and the insidious trauma of boarding schools. Weaving together the voices of four indelible women, The Seed Keeper is a beautifully told story of reawakening, of remembering our original relationship to the seeds and, through them, to our ancestors.

Book Description
Something as small as a seed can have a worldwide impact. Did you know there are top-secret seed vaults hidden throughout the world? And once a seed disappears, that’s it—it’s gone forever? With the growth of genetically modified foods, the use of many seeds is dwindling—of 80,000 edible plants, only about 150 are being cultivated. With a global cast of men and women, scientists and laypeople, and photographic documentation, Nancy Castaldo chronicles where our food comes from, and more importantly, where it is going as she digs deeper into the importance of seeds in our world. This empowering book also calls young adult readers to action with suggestions as to how they can preserve the variety of one of our most valuable food sources through simple everyday actions. Readers of Michael Pollen will enjoy the depth and fascinatingly intricate social economy of seeds.

Book Description
The Two Seeds is an exposition of Genesis 3. “And Hashem Elohim said to the Woman [Eve], ‘What is this you have done?’ And the Woman said, ‘The Serpent [the Nachash] beguiled [cheated, outwitted, and deceived] me, and I ate.’ And Hashem Elohim said to the Serpent, ‘Because you have done this, you are cursed above all [domestic] animals and above every [wild] living thing of the field; upon your belly you shall go, and you shall eat dust [and what it contains] all the days of your life. And I will put enmity between you and the Woman, and between your seed and her Seed; He will bruise and tread your head underfoot, and you will lie in wait and bruise His heel’” (Gen. 3:13ff). After the Fall of Man (Adam), the war in heaven led by the archangel Michael against the dragon, thence, the ancient serpent Satan, would continue on the earth. “And the huge Dragon was cast down and out—that ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan, he who is the seducer [deceiver] of all Humanity the World over; he was forced out and down to the Earth, and his angels were flung out along with him” (Rev. 12:1ff, 19:1ff; Isa. 14:1ff; Ezek. 28:1ff; Luke 10:1ff; John 16:7ff; among others). The war between the two seeds would be a war of the spirit beings fought through human beings and other living things to the detriment of those who make the wrong choices during the battles to save the world of man! How did it begin, and how will it end? Prophet Daniel (12:8) wanted to know more and wrote, “And I heard, but I did not understand. Then I said: O my Lord, what shall be the issue and final end of these things?” This is the one question every believer is dying to know, literally.

Book Description
These Proceedings are a product of the International Workshop on Seeds held in Williamsburg, Virginia, USA, at the College of William and Mary, during the week of August 6-11, 1989. Sixty-eight participants attended. The location provided a scenic and historical setting for the excellent work presented. Good facilities and amenities also contributed to the success of the meeting. The Proceedings present the substance of the main lectures given at this meeting. In addition, there were 29 brief paper presentations and 30 poster presentations which have been summarized in abstract form in a separate publication. This meeting represents the third such meeting of a diverse group of scientists interested in the behavior of seeds, both in an agricultural sense and as tools for the advancement of more particular s~bject matter. The first meeting was held in Jerusalem, Israel in 1980 and the second in Wageningen, The Netherlands in 1985. A fourth meeting is being planned. The Editor and Organizer wishes to thank not only the contributors to this volume for their efforts but also all the other participants whose combined efforts made this meeting a great success.
