Book Description
"The Longitudinal Immigration Database (IMDB) is a comprehensive source of data that plays a key role in the understanding of the economic behaviour of immigrants. It is the only annual Canadian dataset that allows users to study the characteristics of immigrants to Canada at the time of admission and their economic outcomes and regional (inter-provincial) mobility over a time span of more than 30 years. The IMDB combines administrative files on immigrant admissions and non-permanent resident permits from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) with tax files from the Canadian Revenue Agency (CRA). Information is available for immigrant taxfilers admitted since 1980. Tax records for 1982 and subsequent years are available for immigrant taxfilers. This report will discuss the IMDB data sources, concepts and variables, record linkage, data processing, dissemination, data evaluation and quality indicators, comparability with other immigration datasets, and the analyses possible with the IMDB"--Abstract.

Book Description
The longitudinal Immigration Data Base (IMDB) combines administrative records on immigration, employment, and taxation activities into a comprehensive source of data on the labour market behaviour of the Canadian landed immigrant population. It covers 1980-1995 and will be updated annually starting with the 1996 tax year in 1998. The IMDB allows analysis of relative labour market behaviour of different categories of immigrants over a period long enough to assess the impact of immigrant characteristics on their settlement success. This report describes the content of the IMDB, the variables it contains, its coverage, file structure, and statistical products being made available from the IMDB. Two charts are presented to illustrate some of the ways the IMDB can be structured for viewing or analysis.

Book Description
The file includes the number of permits, the type of permit (work or study, for example), and the first year of temporary residence. [...] The most striking change implemented during the period covered by the IMDB is undoubtedly the replacement of the Immigration Act, 1976, by the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, which came into force in 2002. [...] While the exact definitions of these variables are covered in the immigration component of the IMDB dictionary, some of the more nuanced concepts warrant elaboration in this report. [...] Under geographies of origin, the country variables on the landing file indicate the individual's country of birth, country of citizenship, and last residence at the time of landing. [...] Some examples include the dissolution of the USSR, Yugoslavia, and Czechoslovakia; the union of Sikkim and India and of Vietnam and North Vietnam; and the creation of South Sudan.

Book Description
This paper describes the structure and linkage of two databases: the Longitudinal Administrative Databank (LAD), and the Longitudinal Immigration Database (IMDB). The combined data associate landed immigrant taxfilers on the LAD with their key characteristics upon immigration. The paper highlights how the combined information, referred to here as the LAD_IMDB, enhances and complements the existing separate databases. The paper compares the full IMDB file with the sample of immigrants to assess the representativeness of the sample file.
