Book Description
Excerpt from London in the Jacobite Times, Vol. 2 of 2 The doctor seemed to recall his oath of allegiance when he made a bequest in his will of 500l. To Atterbury. It was an approval, as far as the sum went, of the efforts of the ex - prelate to dethrone George I., and to bring in a Popish sovereign, who was not at all reluctant to promise especial favours to the Church of England I That Atterbury was watching events in London is now known, from his correspondence. In one of his letters from Paris to the Chevalier or King, ' he refers with vexation to the conciliatory course the Government in London was adopting towards the J acobites: They are beginning, ' he says, with Alderman Barber on this head, and have actually offered him his pardon here for s, oqoz., which it shall not be my fault, if he accepts.' The ex-jacobite alderman went over, ' in spite of the Jacobite ex-bishop. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from London in the Jacobite Times, Vol. 1 of 2 Burnet gave him hope. A good time, he said, was coming. The queen was mortally ill. Burnet was then, he said, on his way from Clerkenwell to the Court, and he undertook to send a messenger to Bradbury, to let him know how it fared with Anne. If he were in his Chapel, a token should tell him that the queen was dead. A few hours later, Bradbury was half-way through his sermon, when he saw a handkerchief drop from the hand of a stranger in the gallery. This is said to have been the sign agreed upon. The preacher went quietly on to the end of his discourse but, in the prayer which followed, he moved the pulses of his hearers' hearts, by giving thanks to God for saving the king dom from the doings of its enemies and he asked for God's blessing on the King of England, George I., Elector of Hanover. Book Description
Excerpt from Legends of the Jacobite Wars, Vol. 2 of 3: "Katharine Fairfax" "Isma O'neil" "Pray, Goody, please to moderate the rancour of your tongue, Why flash those sparks of fury from your eyes? Remember when the judgment's weak, the prejudice is strong; A stranger, why will you despise?" - Old Song. In the meantime, honest Will Cunningham, the unhappy object of these suspicions, was refreshing himself, body and spirit, in Sir Teague's comfortable kitchen. His night's ride had sharpened his appetite, and he did full justice to the breakfast laid temptingly before him by the governor's handmaiden, Winny. The fare was far from dainty, for times were hard, but there was no lack of cattle straying in herds round about Sligo. Book Description
Excerpt from Memoirs of the Jacobites of 1715 and 1745, Vol. 2 IT is happily remarked by the editor of the Cul loden Papers, with regard to the devotion of many of the Highland clans to the exiled family of Stuart, that it cannot be a subject requiring vindication; nor, adds the writer, if it raise a glow on the face of their descendants, is it likely to be the blush of shame. The descendants of William Maxwell, Earl of N ithisdale, have reason to remember, with a proud interest, the determined and heroic affection which rescued their ancestor from prison, no less than the courage and fidelity which involved their chief in a perilous undertaking, and in a miserable captivity.
