Avec la traduction de la Phénoménologie de l’Esprit (parue en 1939 et 1941), puis son commentaire (Genèse et structure de la phénoménologie de Hegel en 1947), Logique et existence achevait, en 1961, le triptyque où Jean Hyppolite a concentré l’essentiel de ses études hégéliennes. Ainsi s’accomplissait un travail philosophiquement et historiquement déterminant. Philosophiquement déterminant : la rationalité peut se concilier avec l’histoire sur un mode absolument nouveau, propre à Hegel, mais qu’Hyppolite relit, à la lumière aussi de Heidegger et de Husserl, comme un rapport de la logique et de l’existence, réunies en l’homme : « Par cette liberté [...], l’homme ne se conquiert pas lui-même comme homme, mais devient la demeure de l’universel, du Logos de l’Être, et devient capable de la Vérité. Dans cette ouverture qui permet aux existants de la Nature, et à l’Histoire elle-même, de s’éclairer, de se concevoir, l’Être se comprend comme cet engendrement éternel de soi-même ; c’est la Logique au sens de Hegel, le savoir absolu. L’homme alors existe comme l’être-là naturel en qui apparaît la conscience de soi universelle de l’être. Il est la trace de cette conscience de soi, mais une trace indispensable sans laquelle elle ne serait pas. Logique et existence se joignent ici, si l’Existence est cette liberté de l’homme qui est l’universel, la lumière du sens. Historiquement aussi, Jean Hyppolite exerça un rôle déterminant : jusqu’à sa mort, en 1968, il fut en effet, pour plusieurs générations d’étudiants, l’introducteur par excellence à Hegel ; il fut, comme professeur de khâgne, puis d’Université, comme directeur de l’École normale et, enfin, au Collège de France, l’incitateur, le soutien et le responsable d’innombrables thèses et travaux, parmi lesquels on compte certains des livres les plus significatifs de la philosophie française d’aujourd’hui (que l’on songe aux auteurs de L’hommage à Jean Hyppolite, paru en 1971). Il fut enfin le fondateur de la collection « Épiméthée », qu’il dirigea jusqu’à la fin.

Knowing and History charts the development of Hegelian philosophy of history in France from the 1930s through the postwar period, and critically assesses its significance for an understanding of our cultural present and of the possibilities for making meaning out of change over time. Michael Roth provides detailed analyses of the works of three of the most important Hegelian thinkers: Jean Hyppolite, Alexandre Kojève, and Eric Weil. These philosophers turned to history as the source of truths and criteria of judgment: they forged connections between history and knowing as a means of confronting key modem philosophical problems, and of engaging their contemporary political concerns. By the 1950s, however, they had withdrawn from the historical in search of a more secure, hopeful subject for reflection. According to Roth, the French Hegelians' work illuminates the power and limitations of the philosophical approach to history. Further, he finds in the development of their philosophies one of the crucial transformations in modem intellectual history: the shift from a concern with questions of significance to a concern with questions of use or function. He seeks to explicate the contemporary retreat from questions of significance by situating our cultural moment in relation to its intellectual antecedents. In an Afterword devoted to French post-structuralism, the author discusses Hegel's replacement by Nietzsche as the locus of philosophical authority in France in the 1960s, and examines how this shift informs the work of Michel Foucault. Roth argues that the use of Nietzsche against a dialectical philosophy of history contributes to a serious disjunction between philosophical reflection and political judgment. This book will examine one of the oldest problems in understanding what Hegel was trying to do. What is the place ofthe Logic in the Hegelian system? That is, how did Hegel see the relation between "pure thought" and its origins or applications in our many forms of experience? A novel approach to this old question has been adopted. In this atmosphere there is special reason, on both sides, for the study of Hege!. No one has made such extreme claims for metaphysical thought and developed it so extensively and systematieally. No one has demanded more from posterity in the criticism of such thought.
