In sensor network applications, measured data are often meaningful only when the location is accurately known. In this booklet, we study research problems associated with node localization in wireless sensor networks. We describe sensor network localization problems in terms of a detection and estimation framework and we emphasize specifically a cooperative process where sensors with known locations are used to localize nodes at unknown locations. In this class of problems, even if the location of a node is known, the wireless links and transmission modalities between two nodes may be unknown. In this case, sensor nodes are used to detect the location and estimate pertinent data transmission activities between nodes. Received signal strength (RSS)-based localization of people and assets through RFID has significant benefits for logistics, security and safety. However, the accuracy of RFID localization in wireless sensor networks suffers from unrealistic antenna gain pattern assumption, and the human body has a major effect on the gain pattern of the RFID badge that the person is wearing. In this book chapter, the gain pattern due to the effect of the human body is experimentally measured and modeled. A method is presented to estimate the model parameters from multiple RSS measurements. Two joint orientation and position estimators, four-dimensional (4D) maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) algorithm and alternating gain and position estimation (AGAPE) algorithm, are proposed to estimate the orientation and the position of the badge using RSS measurements from anchor nodes. A Bayesian lower bound on the mean squared error of the joint estimation is derived and compared with the Cramer-Rao bound with an isotropic gain pattern. Both theoretical and experimental results show that the accuracy of position estimates can be improved with orientation estimates included in the localization system.

In many applications, measured sensor data is meaningful only when the location of sensors is accurately known. Therefore, the localization accuracy is crucial. In this dissertation, both location estimation and location detection problems are considered. In location estimation problems, sensor nodes at known locations, called anchors, transmit signals to sensor nodes at unknown locations, called nodes, and use these transmissions to estimate the location of the nodes. Specifically, the location estimation in the presence of fading channels using time of arrival (TOA) measurements with narrowband communication signals is considered. Meanwhile, the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) for localization error under different assumptions is derived. Also, maximum likelihood estimators (MLEs) under these assumptions are derived. In large WSNs, distributed location estimation algorithms are more efficient than centralized algorithms. A sequential localization scheme, which is one of distributed location estimation algorithms, is considered. Also, different localization methods, such as TOA, received signal strength (RSS), time difference of arrival (TDOA), direction of arrival (DOA), and large aperture array (LAA) are compared under different signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) conditions. Simulation results show that DOA is the preferred scheme at the low SNR regime and the LAA localization algorithm provides better performance for network discovery at high SNRs. Meanwhile, the CRLB for the localization error using the TOA method is also derived. A distributed location detection scheme, which allows each anchor to make a decision as to whether a node is active or not is proposed. Once an anchor makes a decision, a bit is transmitted to a fusion center (FC). The fusion center combines all the decisions and uses a design parameter $K$ to make the final decision. Three scenarios are considered in this dissertation. Firstly, location detection at a known location is considered. Secondly, detecting a node in a known region is considered. Thirdly, location detection in the presence of fading is considered. The optimal thresholds are derived and the total probability of false alarm and detection under different scenarios are derived.

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have been implemented in a variety of scenarios, including tracking, smart grid, and equipment monitoring. Often times, devices in WSNs are required to know their locations with respect to other devices in the network. This act, known as localization, is the art of predicting the location of a device using anchor devices with known locations in the same network. Localization is essential for many critical industrial applications including underground mines, as the location of devices and employees is vital in helping to guarantee the safety of mining personnel. To the best of our knowledge, existing works have not yet performed extensive research into the use of numerical lters for localization accuracy enhancement. Other works have looked into the use of a speci c numerical lter, however none have covered all of the lters used in this paper. In this thesis, a WSN system that performs localization in an underground mine is proposed. This system uses the Zigbee communication protocol, received signal strength indicator (RSSI) measurements and the trilateration algorithm. The focus of the system is to maximize the accuracy of the predicted location by minimizing the radial error, which is the distance between the predicted location and actual location of a node. Point-to-point tests are performed to determine the best choice of hardware and RSSI model. These were determined to be Texas Instrument's (TI) CC2538 devices and the Piecewise RSSI model respectively. Next, trilateration experiments were performed using nodes containing the CC2538 devices positioned in a star topology. The localization results showed that the system was able to predict the location of a node with some error, which can be improved. Lastly, this thesis discusses the use of numerical ltering algorithms to enhance the accuracy of the predicted location by decreasing the radial error. These lters are as follows: the Statistical Average (SA) lter, the Gaussian lter, the Gaussian and Statistical Average (GSA) lter, the Kalman lter, the Kalman and Statistical Average (KSA) lter, as well as the Alpha-Trimmed Mean (ATM) lter.
