Book Description
Excerpt from The History of University Education in Maryland The State Of Maryland has been almost extravagantly liberal in bestowing charters on colleges and professional schools. Over forty such charters have been given by the legislature and, in many cases, the result has proved that the gift of a charter was not warranted by the stability Of the institution, to which was thus granted the power of conferring degrees. In many other cases, however, the institutions have grown and flourished, and have had an honorable history. Book Description
Excerpt from A History of Anne Arundel County, in Maryland: Adapted for Use in the Schools of the County 1. Maryland was settled under the auspices of a charter granted by King Charles the First of England, to Cecelius Calvert, second Baron of Baltimore, on the 20th of June, 1632. A charter had been written for George Calvert, the father of Cecilius, the first Lord Baltimore - but, before it had passed into the hands of Lord Baltimore, he died. The Province was named in compliment to Queen Henrietta Maria, wife of Charles the First. 2. The territory, embraced in the charter from King Charles, included all that Part of the Peninsula, or Chersonese, lying in the Parts of America between the Ocean on the East, and the bay of Chesopeake on the West, divided from the Residue thereof by a Right Line drawn from the Promontory, or Head Land, called Watkin's Point, situate upon the Bay aforesaid, near the river Wicho on the West, unto the Main Ocean on the East; and between that Boundary on the South unto that Part of the Bay of Delaware on the North, which lieth under the Fortieth Degree of North Latitude from the Aequinoctional, where New England is terminated, and all the Tract of that Land within the metes unwritten (that is to say), passing from the said Bay, called Delaware Bay, in a right line, by the degree aforesaid, unto the true Meridian of the First Fountain of the River Pattowmack, thence verging toward the South, unto the further Bank of the said River, and following the same on the West and South, unto a certain place called Cinquack, situate near the mouth of the said River, where it disembogues into the aforesaid Bay of Chesapeake, and thence by the shortest line unto the aforesaid Promontory, or Place called Watkin's Point." Book Description
Excerpt from Descriptions of Maryland From the time when Lucas Vasquez de Ayllon sailed to America and entered the Chesapeake Bay, many travellers have entered the territory now embraced in the State of Maryland and have written accounts of what they found there. Other descriptions of the State or of parts of it have been written to serve as guide - books to strangers. Still other descriptions, more or less imaginary in character, are found in the pages of works of fiction. It seemed a task worthy of performance to gather together the references to the State found in works in the classes above named and to prepare a chronological bibliography of the descriptions of Maryland. No claim for completeness is made for the list of books; but, at the least, it forms a good working basis for the student. To several classes of investigators the list should prove of use: the man interested in the State's history, the chronicler of local conditions, the student of the manners and customs of the people at any given epoch, and the biographer who may find references to the man whose life he is studying. Most of the books included in the list are contained in the valuable collections of the Enoch Pratt Free Library, and the preparation of the monograph has been possible only because of the cordial co-operation and painstaking care of Miss Anna M. Doerksen, Superintendent of Circulation in that institution. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
