They use masks for important rituals and initiations. These masks are guarded by so-called Go Masters, whose responsibilities are the initiation ceremonies of the male juveniles into adulthood. The moment a dancer wears the mask, he turns into a spirit. During the rituals he falls into a deep trance and utters certain ancestral sounds that are interpreted by a sage. This volume presents the diversity of these world famous fascinating Dan masks. The Lobi believe that the Batebas become alive once they are placed on the shrine. Their task is, above all, to protect the dwellings of the Lobis against witches and other evil spirits.
