Book Description
Bioluminescence is everywhere on earth—most of all in the ocean, from angler fish in the depths to the flashing of dinoflagellates at the surface. Here, Thérèse Wilson and Woody Hastings explore the natural history, evolution, and biochemistry of the diverse array of organisms that emit light. While some bacteria, mushrooms, and invertebrates, as well as fish, are bioluminescent, other vertebrates and plants are not. The sporadic distribution and paucity of luminous forms calls for explanation, as does the fact that unrelated groups evolved completely different biochemical pathways to luminescence. The authors explore the hypothesis that many different luciferase systems arose in the early evolution of life because of their ability to remove oxygen, which was toxic to life when it first appeared on earth. As oxygen became abundant and bioluminescence was no longer adequate for oxygen removal, other antioxidant mechanisms evolved and most luminous species became extinct. Those light-emitting species that avoided extinction evolved uses with survival value for the light itself. Today’s luminous organisms use bioluminescence for defense from predators, for their own predatory purposes, or for communication in sexual courtship. Bioluminescence was earlier viewed as a fascinating feature of the living world, but one whose study seemed unlikely to contribute in any practical way. Today, bioluminescence is no longer an esoteric area of research. Applications are numerous, ranging from the rapid detection of microbial contamination in beef and water, to finding the location of cancer cells, to working out circuitry in the brain.

Open this book and become shining stars in areas such as family, finances, education, and much more. Jesus said Christians are the "lights of the world"; Paul said they are to "shine like stars in the universe." These bright metaphors are a bold contrast to the ever-increasing darkness of evil that fills our world. Can Christians change the world as we have always believed? Can we turn the tide for good in our society? With inspiring messages from Joni Eareckson Tada, Dr. H. Norman Wright, Mother Theresa, Dr. Ronald Sider, and others, Dr. M. Norvel Young reveals ten practical and inspirational ways you can become the "living lights" Christ called you to be.

Book Description
‘Leonard Cohen said that, when you read poetry, you look for someone to illuminate a landscape that you thought you alone walked on. Avani illuminates this in this captivating book of verse, Living Lights. The language is rich and textured, bringing us into the folds of Avani’s thought process. The language captures elusive moments of insight, often profound in their effect. Avani proves to be a diligent thinker as well as an assiduous and clear communicator about topics that might just spark change within. The process Avani has gone through to write this work seems to have been a healing one. For this reason, she inspires us to take a similar look at our own lives. By the end of the collection, I could feel her strength in getting out all that she had to say. She knows what her poems are about, and she knows how they should be told. This work is an ode to a vibrant creativity, a poet who has given into an innate desire to create and watched as her role in the world, and the world itself, came pouring out of it. Her words put a welcome, authentic voice to this most universal collection of emotions. For those who are searching for some self-awareness, self-care, and some kindness, Living Lights is a gift that can show you the way.’ Caroline Stewart – Director of Vocational Qualifications, leading Sixth Form College, UK

Book Description
*NOW A NETFLIX LIMITED SERIES—from producer and director Shawn Levy (Stranger Things) starring Mark Ruffalo, Hugh Laurie, and newcomer Aria Mia Loberti* Winner of the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award finalist, the beloved instant New York Times bestseller and New York Times Book Review Top 10 Book about a blind French girl and a German boy whose paths collide in occupied France as both try to survive the devastation of World War II. Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History where he works as the master of its thousands of locks. When she is six, Marie-Laure goes blind and her father builds a perfect miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize it by touch and navigate her way home. When she is twelve, the Nazis occupy Paris, and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel. In a mining town in Germany, the orphan Werner grows up with his younger sister, enchanted by a crude radio they find. Werner becomes an expert at building and fixing these crucial new instruments, a talent that wins him a place at a brutal academy for Hitler Youth, then a special assignment to track the Resistance. More and more aware of the human cost of his intelligence, Werner travels through the heart of the war and, finally, into Saint-Malo, where his story and Marie-Laure’s converge. Doerr’s “stunning sense of physical detail and gorgeous metaphors” (San Francisco Chronicle) are dazzling. Deftly interweaving the lives of Marie-Laure and Werner, he illuminates the ways, against all odds, people try to be good to one another. Ten years in the writing, All the Light We Cannot See is a magnificent, deeply moving novel from a writer “whose sentences never fail to thrill” (Los Angeles Times).
