Book Description
Excerpt from Lives of the Warriors of the Thirty Years' War, Vol. 2: Warriors of the Seventeenth Century Bernhard of Saxe Weimar, better known in German history as the brave Duke of Weimar, and the successor to the great Gustavus, was born in 1604; but his father, Duke John, died soon after his birth, and he lost his mother when he had scarcely attained the age of fifteen. The brother also who was nearest his own age, and his playmate, died somewhere about the same time so that he was early thrown upon the world, and both from worldly circumstances and dis position left to carve out his own fortune as he could. He adopted the common expedient of German Princes, and took up arms. The world's mine oyster, which I with sword will open. Book Description
Excerpt from Lives of the Warriors of the Thirty Years War, Vol. 1: Warriors of the 17th Century It has long been my settled persuasion, that at a period when active duty cannot be experienced by the war-professions, the injunction of our great Duke to young officers, "that they should go and see service in the field," is best obeyed by a study of the past; and that the histories of wars and warriors are the best and only available substitute for active military service in the field. But unhappily wars and warriors are as old as seas and mountains, and it becomes somewhat difficult to determine within what limits of the world's history we arc to confine our study of strategy and tactics. In the earlier stages of strife, before science of any kind could have been engrafted upon it, bodily prowess must have been of course the one thing needful; but we see from our every-day's experience of savage war, how early barbarian cunning and subtlety leads up to military skill, so that war in its fundamental principles is of very remote antiquity. Book Description
The Eighty Years War (1567-1659) has been the subject of important monographs but the high command of the Army of Flanders, which played a decisive role in the making of Spanish strategy and was in charge of its tactics, has eluded detailed scrutiny. This work, the first study of an early modern officer corps, examines the culture, class structure, and combat effectiveness of the largest army of its day. Combining approaches and insights from social, cultural and military history, it traces the evolution of the leading cadres of the legendary tercios in relation to major trends such as aristocratization and military modernization while revising recent perspectives on Spain’s war against the Dutch and the French in the Low Countries.
