Book Description
Excerpt from Lithography And finally, that the printing of a lithograph may be as artistic as the printing of an etching. This to the professional lithographer is a crime, to the artist a delight. To the professional printer the prints must look just like the artist's drawing, and all be alike. The fact that the artist sees the glimmer of new grace in his work as he prints - the germ of an idea as he goes ou - a new scheme of color as he experiments - is to be suppressed, and the professional lithographer suppresses it; he has been trained to believe litho graphs ought to be as like as two peas. The artist has collapsed under expense - mystery and this artless lithographic ideal. The few who for got these lithographic canons, the trade-unions tried to stifle and drive from the practice of the art. Book Description
Excerpt from The Art of Lithography Having published a small Manual of the Art of Letterpress Printing, in connection with the "People's Printing Press," which I have lately introduced to public notice, and as the press has been extensively patronised by the army, navy, missionaries, professional men, tradesmen, amateur and practical printers, and as it can be used for either letterpress, lithographic, or copper-plate printing, I have been asked upon various occasions to furnish directions for practising the Lithographic Art; and not knowing of any work which treated of Lithography that I might refer any one to, it was thought advisable to embody in a small volume a short treatise of the art. Book Description
Excerpt from Practical Lithography "Alois Senefelder never benefited much by his discovery of the elementary principles of lithography, but none of those to whom it has given profitable occupation will remember without some feeling the patient and persistent efforts of the struggling actor and dramatist who, only after the greatest sacrifices and hardships, laid the germ of this splendid development, and watched and guarded its growth." There is one characteristic feature of the discovery of lithography for which Senefelder ought to receive the fullest credit. Unlike other discoveries of industrial and scientific value, there can be no doubt whatever as to its origin. Senefelder's claim has never been disputed, yet "the payment of a debt of gratitude to the fact is easily overlooked when the wheel of history has made another turn." It has been again and again suggested that the blighting influences of Commercialism have robbed lithography of many of its traditional features and a few, at least, of its best and most artistic qualities as a reproductive art. This same commercial spirit, however, has inspired and encouraged a charming variety of effect both in colour and design, and lithography of to-day, in almost every form of its manifestation, is infinitely more attractive and capable of considerably more expressive power than could ever have been hoped for before commercial utility and value demanded a full recognition. Book Description
Excerpt from Practical Text Book of Lithography: A Modern Treatise on the Art of Printing From Stone In ofiering this book to the lithographic workers the writer believes that he is benefiting the art. He makes no pretense of originality, because the process was dis covered and perfected before he was born, but there has always been a demand for a concise, clear and practical text book to which the worker could turn when a question arose as to the best mode of procedure. We believe that this book will meet that demand. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Invention of Lithography When Senefelder wrote, he had to invent many names for the processes, manipulation-methods, and tools. These terms have been translated literally even where modern practice has adopted other names. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Some Masters of Lithography Omissions of certain well-known lithographers will be noticed by those familiar with the sub jcet, and in particular the omission of the repro ductive men, such as aubry-lecomte and Mouil leron. The question of the respective positions of a man who does original work and one who reproduces the work of others is an old one, and I do not care to enter upon a discussion of it here, especially since there is nothing new to be said upon the subject. Suflice it for me to say that while I recognise the important part played by reproductive work in the past, partien larly before the invention of photography, I can not consider a man who merely interprets the work of others worthy to be placed among the great names of art, any more than I can consid er a translator in literature the equal of a great creative writer. Book Description
Excerpt from Lithography and Lithographers: Some Chapters in the History of the Art Here are endless series of art books - and endless schools of art, endless lecturers on art and art criticism. But so far as I know there are no books on the graphic arts, written or edited, by graphic artists. This series is intended to be a survey of the best work in the past - the work that is admitted to be worth studying - and a definite statement as to the best methods of making drawings, prints, and engravings, written in every case by those who have passed their lives in.
