Book Description
Long years ago, in far-off land, When every brute beast had a way, What he thought and felt, to say In language all could understand-- The sagacious Elephant observed Among these creatures many a failing, And gross abuses, too, prevailing, Which strenuous reform deserved. He called them all, from far and near, His strictures on their ways to hear. With reverence the most profound His long proboscis swept the ground; In careful phrase, well learned by heart, He then discharged the censor's part-- A thousand silly foibles noted, A thousand vicious actions quoted; Envy, working sore vexation, Ostentatious insolence, Idleness, procrastination, The arrogance of ignorance. His sound and noble counsel stirs The hearts of many listeners, Accepting, with due reverence, The dictates of his generous sense. The guileless Lamb and thrifty Ant, The Bee, frugal and provident, The trusty Setter, and the Dove, Ever faithful to her love, The obedient Horse, the Linnet shy, And the simple Butterfly. But, of the audience, a part not small Declared that their offended pride Such language plain could not abide; Not they--no, not at all. The Tiger and rapacious Wolf, Opening their lank jaws' bloody gulf, Against the adviser rave; His vile abuse, among the crowd, The venomous Serpent hissed aloud; While, all around, the whispering tone Of Wasp and Hornet, Fly and Drone, A murmuring echo gave. The mischievous Balm-cricket leapt From the tumultuous throng; The Locust spread his clanging wing, His greedy conscience felt the sting; The wriggling Caterpillar crept His sneaking way along; The Weasel arched his spiteful back; The Fox kept silence shrewd; The Monkey, sauciest of the pack, Mocked, with grimaces rude. The stately Elephant looked down Upon the vexed turmoil: "To each and all and yet to none,"-- Spake his calm voice above the broil,-- "These censures I apply; Let him who winces put them on; Who not, hear quietly."* * * * *Whoever may my fables read, This truth important let him heed: That to all nations--not to any one-- And to all times, they speak. The world has shown alike The faults at which they strike In each revolving week. Then--since the warning finger Points at no destined head-- Who feels the censure linger Must sup on his own bread.CONTENTS:THE ELEPHANT AND OTHER ANIMALSTHE SILKWORM AND SPIDERTHE BEAR, THE MONKEY AND THE HOGTHE DRONES AND THE BEETHE TWO PARROTS AND THE MAGPIETHE SHOWMAN'S MONKEY AND HIS MASTERTHE CATHEDRAL BELL AND THE LITTLE BELLTHE ASS AND THE FLUTETHE ANT AND THE FLEATHE WALL-FLOWER AND THE THYMETHE RABBITS AND THE DOGSTHE EGGSTHE DUCK AND THE SNAKETHE MUFF, THE FAN, AND THE UMBRELLATHE FROG AND THE TADPOLETHE BUSTARDTHE LINNET AND THE SWANTHE HACK MULETHE GOAT AND THE HORSETHE BEE AND THE CUCKOOTHE BAT AND THE CATTHE OWL AND LAMP, AND THE DOGS AND THE RAGMANTHE THRUSH, PARROT AND MAGPIETHE WOLF AND THE SHEPHERDTHE LION, EAGLE AND BATTHE MONKEYTHE ASS AND HIS MASTERTHE TURNSPIT AND THE MULE OF THE WELLTHE AUTHOR AND THE RATTHE SQUIRREL AND THE HORSETHE FOP AND THE LADYTHE OSTRICH, THE DROMEDARY, AND THE FOXTHE CROW AND THE TURKEYTHE SILKWORM AND THE CATERPILLARTHE PURCHASE OF THE ASSTHE OX AND THE GRASSHOPPERTHE MACAW AND THE MARMOTTHE PORTRAITTHE TWO INNSTHE TEA-PLANT AND SAGETHE CAT, THE LIZARD, AND THE CRICKETTHE CONCERT OF THE BEASTSTHE SWORD AND THE SPITTHE UNFORTUNATESTHE COCKSTHE MONKEY AND THE MAGPIETHE NIGHTINGALE AND THE SPARROWTHE GARDENER AND HIS MASTERTHE TWO THRUSHESTHE LACE-MAKERSTHE HUNTER AND HIS FERRETTHE PIG, THE COCK AND THE LAMBTHE FLINT AND THE STEELTHE JUDGE AND THE ROBBERTHE HOUSEMAID AND THE BROOMTHE LIZARDSTHE WATCHESTHE MOLE AND OTHER ANIMALSTHE ROPE-DANGERTHE OWL AND THE TOADTHE OIL MERCHANT'S ASSTHE CONNOISSEURSTHE FROG AND THE HENTHE BEETLETHE RICH MAN'S LIBRARYTHE VIPER AND THE LEECH

The Study of Spanish and Portuguese Literature
Author: Friedrich Bouterwek
Publisher: e-artnow
ISBN:
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 864
Book Description
This 2-volume book on the literature of Spain and Portugal represents an extraction from Bouterwek's most significant critical work entitled Geschichte der Poesie und Beredsamkeit seit dem Ende der dreizehnten Jahrhunderts (History of Poetry and Eloquence from the Close of the Thirteenth Century), in which the author has taken an historical and critical survey of the literature of the principal nations of Europe. The first of the following volumes is devoted to the history of Spanish, and the second to the history of Portuguese Literature. The subdivisions of the work correspond with periods marked out by certain revolutions in taste, produced by the rise of eminent writers, or by other influential circumstances. These epochs in literary cultivation form convenient resting places for the student, and contribute to exhibit in a clear point of view the circumstances by which the advancement of polite learning has been accelerated or retarded. The specimens, which are numerous, and a great portion of which are selected from very scarce works, cannot fail to prove highly acceptable to the lovers of the literature of Spain and Portugal. For a general and comprehensive knowledge of that literature they will be found amply sufficient, and to those who wish to pursue its study more in detail, they will afford most useful assistance. In such a course of study, great advantage may also be derived from the numerous bibliographical notes introduced by the author.
