Book Description
"This work of photojournalism goes inside the system to offer an intimate, often disturbing view of children's experiences in juvenile detention. Steve Liss photographed and interviewed young detainees, their parents, and detention and probation officers in Laredo, Texas. His photographs reveal that these are vulnerable children - sometimes as young as ten - coping with a detention environment that most adults would find harsh. In the accompanying text, he brings in the voices of the young people who describe their already fractured lives and fragile dreams, as well as the words of their parents and juvenile justice workers who express frustration at not having more resources with which to help these kids."--BOOK JACKET.

The Day of Atonement
Author: David Liss
Publisher: Random House
ISBN: 1588369633
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 365
Book Description
“Enthralling . . . [a] sly, rich and swift novel of vengeance and rough justice.”—The Seattle Times NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY LIBRARY JOURNAL Sebastião Raposa is only thirteen when his parents are unjustly imprisoned by the Inquisition, and he is forced to flee Portugal or face the same fate. But a decade in exile only whets his appetite for vengeance—transforming a once frightened boy into a dangerous man, determined to right unforgivable wrongs with unrelenting fury. Well schooled by his benefactor, bounty hunter Benjamin Weaver, in the use of wits and fists alike, Sebastião returns to Lisbon—in the guise of English businessman Sebastian Foxx—to stalk the ruthless Inquisitor priest Pedro Azinheiro. But in a city ruled by terror and treachery, no enemy can be underestimated, nor any ally trusted. As Foxx is drawn into the struggles of old friends, confronted by new foes, and forced to play a game of deception, he finds himself befriended, betrayed, tempted by desire, and tormented by personal turmoil. And when a twist of fate turns his plans to chaos, he must choose between surrendering to bloodlust or serving the cause of mercy. Praise for The Day of Atonement “One of the masters of the historical thriller, Liss is back with yet another highly entertaining novel. . . . [The Day of Atonement] paints a vivid picture of the waning days of the Inquisition, and of the truly evil religious leaders who led it. One of Liss’s best books.”—Minneapolis Star Tribune “Foxx is reminiscent of Lee Child’s Jack Reacher: a man with his own moral code who takes on multiple adversaries simultaneously. . . . Liss has the start of another solidly researched, action-packed historical series here.”—Booklist (starred review) “[An] action-packed novel.”—The Wall Street Journal “Snappy dialogue and convincing atmosphere . . . The plot moves swiftly to a shattering climax.”—The Washington Post “Another intriguing thriller set against historical events for Liss, who has a knack for period detail, breakneck plots and characters we want to root for.”—San Antonio Express-News “Fans of [David] Liss know well his mix of dark arts and historical detail.”—New York Daily News

Bandage Project

Book Description
Very rarely in education, does a person find a group of students so passionate about a project that they touch lives all over the world? How many times have students stayed with something for over 11 years and were even there at the conclusion? Our story offers hope, determination and the ability to see that children can truly change the world. There are many stories out there about the Holocaust, but none that took over 11 years to complete. Our Bandage Project touched lives in ALL 50 states and in 23 countries! Our story even touched the Anne Frank house in Amsterdam. My students received visits from the Anne Frank staff and were invited to share their story at museums and schools across the country. What also makes out story unique, is that our students are 100% high poverty mostly minority students. These children had never even heard of the Holocaust before. No one expected this project to be successful in the beginning except a group of kids and their teacher. This story begins with best friends of different races and ends with children of all races joining together to help its completion. Our story gave others courage to stand up and most of all, our story helped heal lives of those personally affected by the Holocaust. Our story gives those children who never were able to live to tell their story, a chance to be remembered. Our book begs to be shared with the world along with the Bandage Project container filled with the over 1.5 million bandages with names to honor all of those innocent children murdered during the Holocaust.

Languages : en
Pages : 174
Book Description
Do you sometimes feel bogged down or held back by unhelpful thinking patterns and low moods? In other words: are you human? Do you have worries, regrets, and fears? Do frustrations, insecurities, or resentments get in the way of doing, feeling, and being your best self? Do you occasionally wanna curl up in a fetal ball hooked up to an IV drip of chocolate and Netflix, or punch the whole, wide, world in the face? No? Just me, then?Chaotic thinking and feeling are common internal struggles, and I think most people encounter variations of this problem in some way or another. Unhelpful negativity has a pesky way of preventing us from feeling good and doing what we want to do. It's kind of like a gallon of bird-poop smeared across the windshield of life... The "horizon of healthy thinking" concept is a clear, simple-to-use, transformative therapeutic exercise. This user-friendly process can be applied when you're feeling down, and gently move you to a place of practical engagement with reality. The third phase leads you to a mentality of tranquility, possibility and empowerment. You do all this by harnessing the underrated power of your very own thoughts. This new, enhanced mindset is called: "above the horizon" and it's where our awesomest inner selves reside. It's what makes us most conducive to happiness, growth, fulfillment and good hair days. If you know how great you feel when you're in that headspace, the tools in this book can help you do more of that, on demand. And even if it's been awhile since you last felt good, this powerful technique can help you ease yourself out of that rut, address your reality from an honest perspective, and then set you on track to becoming more like the "you" that you want to be.

Thriving on Our Changing Planet
Author: National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 0309467578
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 717
Book Description
We live on a dynamic Earth shaped by both natural processes and the impacts of humans on their environment. It is in our collective interest to observe and understand our planet, and to predict future behavior to the extent possible, in order to effectively manage resources, successfully respond to threats from natural and human-induced environmental change, and capitalize on the opportunities â€" social, economic, security, and more â€" that such knowledge can bring. By continuously monitoring and exploring Earth, developing a deep understanding of its evolving behavior, and characterizing the processes that shape and reshape the environment in which we live, we not only advance knowledge and basic discovery about our planet, but we further develop the foundation upon which benefits to society are built. Thriving on Our Changing Planet presents prioritized science, applications, and observations, along with related strategic and programmatic guidance, to support the U.S. civil space Earth observation program over the coming decade.
