Book Description
This study is an examination of three areas: historical U.S. liquid propellant development, liquid propellant logistical considerations and the technical considerations in the application of a liquid propellant gun in a combat vehicle. The study examines the potential and demonstrated benefits of liquid propellants for the military. The study uses the solid propellant guns technology as the baseline to conduct a comparison of liquid propellant guns in the same operational requirements. The analysis by the author on the logistical impacts focuses on the industrial base conversion, production costs of propellants, ammunition transportation requirements, and liquid propellant demilitarization. The analysis continues with a discussion on combat vehicle survivability, firepower, and mobility. This study concludes that a liquid propellant gun is a viable option for the Army to pursue.

Book Description
Rocket Propulsion has come of age. Although its potentialities and capabilities in many areas have been recognized for centuries, it is only in recent years that scientists have had the materials and the manufacturing techniques at their command so they could control and direct the tremendous forces available. Space exploration and manned flights by astronauts have brought the science of rocketry to the attention of the general public. It has also stimulated the interest of students at all levels of advancement in the technical details of space flight. Rocket Propellant Technologies is written for serious students of astronautics. This volume reviews briefly the history of rocketry and the fundamental principles connected with rocket propulsion. Types of propellants, the chemical reactions involved, and the techniques used in manufacturing are explained. The merits of solid and liquid fuels are enumerated. Exotic propellants of the future are discussed, with reasons why their development is essential. Finally, the safety aspects of manufacturing and testing rocket propellants are given in detail. The Amateur Rocket Association under whose guidance this series has been prepared, serves as a focal point for many related activities, bringing new ideas to the attention of its members and offering suggestions for future lines of research.

Book Description
The 155-mm regenerative liquid propellant gun (RLPG) system was built by General Electric (GE) specifically for the advanced field artillery system (AFAS) program. During its development and testing, a series of test firings were conducted at the GE, Malta, NY test facility. These test firings revealed that high frequency pressure oscillations that are known to exist in some RLPG, existed during the firing of this gun. In light of this phenomenon, many experimental studies and model simulations of the propellant ignition/combustion processes of the RLPG system were performed. These studies were performed by the Ballistic Research Laboratory (BRL), Sandia National Laboratories (SNL), and the Tactical Systems Department of GE, concluding that the main sources of pressure oscillations are inherent in the combustion process of liquid propellants (LP). The New Cannon/Development Compatibility Section of the Ammunition and Security Technology Division at AEDEC was tasked to investigate the effects of these LP pressure oscillations on projectile components and identify and safety concerns due to these oscillations. This investigation included firing seven instrumented projectiles incorporated of the RLPG 2 and one instrumented projectile out of the XM282 52 cal. tube as a comparison solid propellant gun firing. Seven of the eight instrumented projectiles incorporated pressure transducers, which were designed to measure base pressure profiles at the projectile during the interior ballistic cycle. This is the first time that the Army was able to measure base pressure and map the base pressure profile during the interior ballistic cycle. Liquid propellants, Oscillations, Pressure transducers, Accelerometers, RLPG, Instrumented projectile.

Book Description
Regenerative liquid propellant gun (RLPG) technology is sufficiently mature to allow the testing of the first 155 mm liquid propellant gun. In support of the development of this artillery weapon, test fixtures in 30 mm and 105 mm sizes have been built and fired. This report describes the analysis and modeling of the 105 mm gun fixture. A previous report discussed the 30 mm gun fixture, and a future report will concentrate on the 155 mm gun. The model is first benchmarked against a series of long charge firings. The process of choosing input values for the gun code is discussed in detail. The model is then used to predict the performance of a medium charge firing and a short charge firing. Finally, further analysis of the data is presented in which assumptions governing the selection of values for the empirical parameters are modified. Keywords: Liquid monopropellant; Regenerative gun; Lumped parameter parameter model. (jhd).

Regenerative liquid propellant gun (RLPG) technology is sufficiently mature to allow the testing of the first 155 mm liquid propellant gun. In support of the development of this artillery weapon, test fixtures in 30 mm and 105 mm sizes have been built and fired. This report describes the analysis and modeling of the 155 mm gun fixture labeled Gun 1, an experimental fixture planned as the forerunner of the final design. Previous reports discussed the 30 mm gun fixtures. The 155 mm Concept VIC gun design is described together with a brief discussion of the 155 mm test program. Three charge sizes of 2 liter, 5 liter and 7 liter were tested with two igniters, a one-stage solid propellant igniter and a two-stage solid and liquid propellant igniter. The experimental data are analyzed, and the model is compared to experiment. The process of choosing input values for the gun code is discussed in detail. The result is in excellent agreement with all the experimental data. (edc).

Regenerative liquid propellant gun (RLPG) technology is sufficient mature to allow the testing of the first 155-mm liquid propellant gun. In support of the development of this artillery weapon, test fixtures in 30-mm and 105-mm sizes have been built and fired. This report describes the analysis and modeling of the 30-mm gun fixture. Future reports will concentrate on the 105-mm and 155-mm guns. The Concept VIC gun design is described. The basic assumptions in the numerical lumped parameter model are described. Modifications to the model required by the VIC gun are given. There is a brief discussion of the 30-mm test program. The model is first benchmarked against a series of medium charge firings. These are the best characterized set of experiments, with the best reproducibility. The process of choosing input values for the gun code is discussed in detail. The result is excellent agreement with all of the experimental data. The model is then used to predict the performance of some of the short-charge firings. The muzzle velocities are predicted very accurately. The pressure profiles are not. The reasons for the lack of agreement in the pressure profiles are discussed. Keywords: Liquid gun propellants, Liquid monopropellant, Regenerative gun, Liquid propellant guns, Lumped parameter model, Gun propellants.

Book Description
Liquid propellants have been the focus of periodic research efforts since just after the Second World War. Early efforts centered on the mechanically simple bulk loaded liquid propellant gun. A large number of experimental gun firings were conducted, and semi-quantitative models of the bulk loaded interior ballistic process were developed. However, the ballistic control required of a practical gun system has been achieved. In contrast, the regenerative liquid propellant gun has demonstrated the required ballistic control, but at the expense of mechanical complexity heretofore unknown in gun systems. Nevertheless, the regenerative liquid propellant gun may provide the mechanism for the development of a practical weapon system based on a liquid gun propellant.
