Liquid Extraction Column Studies Using a Matched Refractive Index System

Book Description
This thesis is concerned with single drop hydrodynamic behaviour in a Rotating Disc Contactor (RDC). The first part of this thesis concerns how drops move in an RDC. It has been found that the drop velocity is different on the two sides of the disc and drop residence time at the rotor and stator occupied 25-40% of the whole residence time in a compartment. The second part of this thesis concerns drop breakage in a matched refractive index system in an RDC. The edge of the disc is a main drop breakage zone; two senu-empirical correlations based on Schlichting's boundary thickness theory and drop shape are offered for both larninar and turbulent cases. For a high viscosity continuous phase system, it was found that drop breakage probability as a fiinction of rotor speed was nearly a Delta ftinction. Drop breakage behaviour in a 600 mm RDC is very different from that in a small diameter RDC. Drop breakage in a drop swarm was also researched in this thesis. Critical rotor speed was uncertain in this case, so a statistical average critical rotor speed was suggested. The Mugele-Evans distribution fiinction still is the best one to express the resulting drop size distribution in the high viscosity continuous phase case. The third part of this thesis concerns moving drop shape. It has been found that the drop deformation zone is around the disc only and it is small relative to a compartment volume. Moving drop shape depends strongly on the drop path, and a drop may not change its original shape if it does not pass through the disc boundary layer. In the fourth part of this thesis a study was made to find how the single drop Residence Time Distribution in an RDC can be related to the dispersed phase axial mixing. It has been found that the Mugele-Evans distribution is the best function for expressing the RTD.

Solvent Extraction 1990
Author: T. Sekine
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0444596399
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 870
Book Description
Solvent extraction is employed very widely in both fundamental research and technology because of the remarkable features of this simple but very effective technique for the separation of different materials. The International Solvent Extraction Conference 1990 was a forum for the presentation of papers on up-to-date research in this field. The collection of the papers in these volumes will be invaluable because information on solvent extraction is often scattered in various journals and proceedings which make the following of developments difficult.
