The Farm to School movement seeks to address the issues of child diet-related-diseases, low food literacy among school-children, and struggling local agricultural systems by connecting farms and schools through food education, school garden programs, and inclusion of local products in school meal programs. Harvest of the Month programs are statewide or district-wide initiatives that offer promotional materials and support services through featuring one local product each month for organizations interested in participating in Farm to School (FTS). While other New England states, notably Vermont and Massachusetts, have Harvest of the Month programs, Connecticut does not. This report describes the creation and implementation of a Connecticut Harvest of the Month program called "Put Local on Your Tray". The issues of child health, food literacy, and agriculture in the U.S. are explored, and provide a context for the Farm to School movement. Theory behind Farm to School program interventions provides the basis for the development of Harvest of the Month programs. Finally, the process of creating and piloting the Put Local on Your Tray program in Connecticut during the 2015-16 academic year is outlined, with discussion on the impact and need for further research.
