Book Description
We are COVID veterans together. We have felt the suspension of plans and certainties, apprehension for our own health and for those dear to us, separation from family and friends. These poems came about in the empty space, the clear table that COVID left in its wake. The palate cleansed allowed thoughts to percolate and mature; sights ‘seen’ frequently over many years were seen as if for the first time, the mystery and majesty of sunlight both in summer and winter, early and late. When we have everything, we can never have enough but when we have less we can appreciate the gifts that surround us, the blessing of presence. Feeling separated, these were an attempt to connect with friends, family, myself. Inside you'll find musings and bemusings on life after death, life before death, depression, dogs, cats, the wonderful world of nature around us, the mysterious world within us, politics, palmistry, children. Speaking of nature, she never got the memo. She just carried on. As should we.

Book Description
Abraham Lincoln drew upon history in his political career and particularly when crafting the rhetorical masterpieces that still resonate in the present day. Jesse Derber explores how Lincoln’s views of the limits of human understanding drove a belief in--and untiring pursuit of--historical truth. Lincoln embraced the traditional ideas that good history made good statesmanship and that an understanding of the past informed decision-making in the present. Seeing history as a source of wisdom, Lincoln strove for accuracy through a combination of research, reasoning ability, emotional maturity, and a willingness to admit his mistakes and challenge his biases. His philosophy flowed from an idea that authentic history could enlighten people about human nature. Though he revered precedents, Lincoln understood the past could be imperfect, and that progress through change was an ineffable part of building a better nation. Perceptive and revealing, Abraham Lincoln, Statesman Historian looks at how the Lincoln practiced history and applied its lessons to politics and leadership.

Book Description
An exhilarating and intimate look at what happened when the pandemic emptied the city— and a rebellious energy reclaimed the streets. Author, social critic, and “New York City’s career elegist” (New York Times), Jeremiah Moss felt alienated in a town that had become suburbanized and sanitized. Then lockdown launched an unprecedented urban experiment: What happens when an entire social class abandons the city? Out in streets made vibrant by New Yorkers left behind, Moss found a sense of freedom he never thought possible. Participating in a historic explosion of protest, resistance, and spontaneity, from queer BLM marches to exuberant outdoor dance parties, he discovers that, without “hyper-normal” people to constrain it, New York can be more creative, connected, humane, and joyful. In this genre-bending work of “autotheory,” Moss gives an account of his renewed sense of place as a transgender man, braiding the narrative with psychoanalysis, literature, and queer theory, as he offers valuable insight into the way public space—and the spaces inside us—are controlled and can be set free.

Book Description
Lincoln is a young lady lost without her father. He was the only person Lincoln has ever had a true bond with. She's trying to maneuver in a world she is not equipped to handle on her own. She is left with a self-centered mother, who's only concerned with the fact she got pregnant by a soldier (Lincoln's dad), and she will always get a monthly benefit check from the army. Lincoln became her security blanket but also the biggest throne on her side. Lincoln leaves home for good as an early teen and is misguided by her own distorted thinking and her ideological thoughts of what a perfect life consists of. Lincoln meets Lance, and he has all the great qualities Lincoln felt a person should have. He had a great smile, the innocence that she felt every young person still has, and the perfect parents. He was born and raised in an apostolic church, so Lincoln just knew in her heart he was heaven-sent. Lincoln always knew she had all her ducks lined up perfectly, and marriage to Lance completes her line of ducks along with two of his children. After being married, Lincoln learns nothing is perfect in this world, and her ducks begin to waddle away one by one. Lincoln has to deal with her husband having an affair, a gambling addiction that spiraled out of control, and the men who loved her. She was unable to commit to anyone. Lincoln has to figure out a way to fix her life, which has been crumbling. She has been running away from herself for so long that now she has caught up and has to deal with the consequences. Finally, Lincoln is rejoined with all her sisters on a cruise that is unforgettable.

Book Description
What did Abraham Lincoln envision when he talked about "reconstruction?" Assassinated in 1865, the president did not have a chance to begin the work of reconciling the North and South, nor to oversee Reconstruction as an official postwar strategy. Yet his final speech, given to thousands gathered in the rain outside the White House on April 11, 1865, gives a clear indication of what Lincoln's postwar policy might have looked like-one that differed starkly from what would emerge in the tumultuous decade that followed. In Lincoln's Last Speech, renowned historian and author Louis P. Masur offers insight into this critical address and its vision of a reconstructed United States. Coming two days after Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox and a week after the fall of Richmond, Lincoln's speech was expected to be a victory oration. Instead, he looked to the future, discussing how best to restore the seceded states to the national government, and even endorsing limited black suffrage. Delving into the language and arguments of Lincoln's last address, Masur traces the theme of reconstruction as it developed throughout his presidency, starting with the very earliest days of the war. Masur illuminates the evolution of Lincoln's thinking and the national debate around reconstruction, touching on key moments such as the Proclamation of Amnesty and Reconstruction on December 8, 1863, and Lincoln's pocket veto of the Wade-Davis bill in July 1864. He also examines social reconstruction, including the plight of freedmen and the debate over the place of blacks in society; and considers the implications of Lincoln's speech after April 1865, when Andrew Johnson assumed office and the ground was laid for the most radical phases of the postwar policy. A nuanced study of Lincoln's views on national reconciliation, this work gives us a better understanding of the failures that occurred with postwar Reconstruction and the eventual path that brought the country to reunion.
