Book Description
Excerpt from The Biography of John Gibson, R. A., Sculptor, Rome This biography of John Gibson is largely an autobiography, being entirely based upon his own notes and letters and, as far as possible, in his own words. There can be doubt that Gibson hoped that Mrs. Margaret Sandbach of Hafod-un-nos would write his biography. Mr. and Mrs. Sandbach visited Rome in 1838 and commenced a life-long friendship with the famous sculptor. Mrs. Sandbach had inherited much of the talent of the Roscoes, and was a writer of considerable ability. As the grand-daughter of his first patron William Roscoe, Gibson was predisposed to think highly of her. Nor was he disappointed. She must have elicited a promise from him to correspond with her regularly, to enable her to write a memoir of him. The letters commence with the year 1839. Departure for Rome--Madame Pasta--Canova's Liberality--Introduced at Canova's Academy--Education of a Sculptor at Rome--"The Sleeping Shepherd"--Commissions from Duke of Devonshire and Sir George Beaumont--Happiness at Rome--Sir Watkin Williams Wynn. 'T LEFT England for Rome in September, --1817. A gentleman whose acquaintance I had made in London, Mr. Bonomi, procured for me a letter of introduction to Mr. Bartolozzi, then residing in Paris with his daughter, Madame Vestris: she was ill in bed, and I did not see her, but he was remarkably kind to me, taking me about the place. I could not speak any language but English and Welsh; the latter, however, was of no use to me in Paris. 'In the course of a few days Mr. Bartolozzi found a Roman vetturino who was about to return to Rome, which was a fortunate circumstance for me. I was further so fortunate as to share the carriage with a young Scotchman of the name of Graham. This gentleman had a servant with him who spoke English, French, and Italian, and he A rrival in Rome. 45 took care of me as well as of his master in the way of interpretation. There was also another vettura which kept company with us as far as Milan, and in that was Madame Pasta with her young husband and her mother.' We have often heard Mr. Gibson describe this grand and truly Italian lady, then just commencing her distinguished career; how she would pour forth her glorious voice in snatches of song as they walked up and down the hills, and how she would occasionally exert it too in scolding her husband, 'which, ' he used to add, ' impressed me with a profound conviction of the resources of the Italian language for such feminine purposes.' 'When we arrived at Florence, my companion, Mr. Graham, remained there, ...

Book Description
Living with the Royal Academy: Artistic Ideals and Experiences in England, 1768-1848 offers a range of case studies which consider individual artists' personal, professional and artistic relationships with the Royal Academy during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, bringing together the research of leading historians of British artistic culture during this period. Over its introduction and nine essays, this collection considers the Academy as a lived organism whose most effective role, following its establishment in 1768, was as a reference point towards, around and against which artists operated in their relationships with each other and with artistic practice itself. In so doing, this collection also considers the relationship between Academic ideals and individual practice (as well as lived experience) during this period of art?s increasingly public manifestation at the Academy. Individual artists examined include Joshua Reynolds, Joseph Wright of Derby, Benjamin West and William Etty. Thinking beyond the dichotomy of loyalism and rebellion - and complicating notions of the Academy as a monolithic ossifying institution from which progressive artists would be ?liberated? in the wake of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood?s emergence in 1848 - this volume investigates the Academy?s varied impact upon the lives, experiences and ideals of its diverse artistic communities.
