In the history of Christian thought, St Bonaventure stands out as the pre-eminent Franciscan philosopher of the 13th century and as a key figure in the development of the spiritual theology of the Church. The four studies which constitute this volume present detailed investigations into some of the principal sources from which Bonaventure drew his inspiration, from Antiquity through to St Bernard in the century before his own. Proceeding from a careful analysis of the quotations he makes from these sources, the studies make clear the precise extent and nature of their importance in Bonaventure’s own thought, and the manner in which he selected ideas and used them to serve his own purposes. The first two pieces focus on the influence exerted by the Pseudo-Dionysius, in particular as concerns his notion of hierarchy; this became a central and fertile theme in the work of the Franciscan. Father Bougerol shows how Bonaventure interpreted and developed it, in the process transforming it into a meditation on the relationship between man and God. This emphasis also emerges in the third study, on his attitude towards Aristotle, which demonstrates Bonaventure’s deliberate progress towards the elaboration of his spiritual theology.

Children of God in the World is a textbook of theological anthropology structured in four parts. The first attempts to clarify the relationship between theology, philosophy and science in their respective approaches to anthropology, and establishes the fundamental principle of the text, stated in Vatican II's Gaudium et spes, n. 22, "Christ manifests man to man." The second part provides a historical overview of the doctrine of grace: in Scripture (especially the teaching of the book of Genesis on humans 'made in the image of God', as well as Paul and John), among the Fathers (in particular the oriental doctrine of 'divinization' and Augustine), during the Middle Ages (especially Thomas Aquinas) and the Reformation period (centered particularly on Luther and the Council of Trent), right up to modern times. The third part of the text, the central one, provides a systematic understanding of Christian grace in terms of the God's life present in human believers by which they become children of God, disciples, friends and brothers of Christ, temples of the Holy Spirit. This section also provides a reflection on the theological virtues (faith, hope and charity), on the relationship between grace and human freedom, on the role of the Church and Christian apostolate in the communication of grace, and on the need humans have for divine grace. After considering the relationship between the natural and the supernatural order, the fourth and last part deals with different philosophical aspects of the human condition, in the light of Christian faith: the union between body and soul, humans as free, historical, social, sexual and working beings. EditorialAprès avoir envisagé, dans le numéro 128 de notre revue, la manière dont les Pères latins comprennent la création de l’être humain à l’image de Dieu, nous publions le deuxième volet des Rencontres nationales de patristique de Toulouse de juillet 2012, en passant cette fois aux Pères grecs. En envisageant la patristique grecque, nous pensons immédiatement à une réflexion sur la théosis, sur la divinisation de l’être humain, créé à l’image de la Trinité, ce qui apparaît clairement chez Maxime le Confesseur. Nous verrons ce qu’il en est pour les autres Pères au fil des articles denses qui composent ce numéro. C’est, tout d’abord, Régis Burnet qui propose une étude sémantique où il envisage, non seulement la distinction entre l’image et la ressemblance, mais aussi le rapport entre la création de l’être humain à l’image de Dieu et l’Image par excellence qui est le Christ. Puis Jérôme Moreau reprend la question à partir de Philon d’Alexandrie, qui considère les deux récits de la création comme un seul, en deux étapes et qui situe l’image de Dieu dans l’intellect. En abordant la question de l’image de Dieu chez Origène, Daniel Vigne relève un défi, car il intervient après la thèse d’Henri Crouzel sur la question, mais il va encore plus loin, en approfondissant l’image de Dieu à partir de la Trinité, de la création et du salut. De manière originale, Guillaume Bady et Laurence Mellerin relisent principalement Tertullien et Grégoire de Nysse pour voir comment ils envisagent la différence entre l’homme et la femme, créés à l’image de Dieu. Ensuite, Marlène Kanaan étudie la question de la création de l’être humain à l’image de Dieu dans le traité Sur l’origine de l’homme de Basile de Césarée. Finalement, Élie Ayroulet met en évidence l’originalité de la compréhension de l’image de Dieu chez Maxime. Par le jeu de la liberté et de la grâce, elle est l’expression de « l’intentionnalité divine à diviniser (l’être humain) dans le Fils unique à l’image duquel il l’a créé ».
