Or le Moyen Âge, sans doute plus que nulle autre époque, a porté un intérêt extrême à la figure du Macédonien, en Europe aussi bien qu’au Proche-Orient arabe et perse, lui conférant ainsi une réelle universalité. La transmission des textes de l’Antiquité tardive s’accompagne d’une métamorphose concertée et aboutit à une recréation sans cesse renouvelée de son histoire. Parmi toutes les œuvres médiévales écrites sur l’espace européen, la critique moderne a privilégié celles qu’elle a appelées « romans d’Alexandre ». Mais au-delà et parfois en interaction avec eux, de multiples récits de la vie d’Alexandre relèvent de l’écriture de l’Histoire, qu’ils soient autonomes ou bien appartiennent à des histoires universelles, des compilations d’histoire ancienne et des recueils d’exemples. Copiés dans de très nombreux manuscrits, souvent luxueux, ils ont pour beaucoup joui d’une diffusion extraordinaire. Ce pan essentiel de la réception d’Alexandre au Moyen Âge mérite donc pleinement d’être analysé en tant que tel. Or la recherche l’a jusqu’à présent peu exploité, souvent faute d’éditions disponibles, souvent aussi pour la raison que ces textes ne véhiculent pas « la » vérité sur Alexandre – mais comment leurs auteurs, tributaires des connaissances de leur époque, auraient-ils pu y parvenir et nous-mêmes, oserions-nous prétendre avoir découvert « la » vérité sur Alexandre ? – et qu’ils ne correspondent pas aux conceptions modernes de l’écriture de l’Histoire. Ainsi, l’historiographie médiévale européenne d’Alexandre reste encore largement à explorer. Le présent ouvrage n’entend pas présenter une synthèse – ce serait une tâche impossible en l’état actuel des éditions et des études – mais mettre l’accent sur des œuvres importantes, dont certaines ne sont pas encore éditées, et poser les jalons d’une réflexion à poursuivre, en éveillant l’intérêt pour la richesse et la diversité de cette historiographie médiévale d’Alexandre (4e de couverture)

The medieval reception of Alexander the Great inspired a complicated literary corpus not simply because it involved so many source-texts and languages, but because it incorporated such diverse perspectives on the conqueror. Beginning with a discussion of the evolution of this corpus, this book examines the manuscripts, readership, and historical contexts of the earliest surviving Alexander romance in England, Thomas de Kent’s Anglo-Norman Roman de toute chevalerie. To shed light on the origins and treatment of this romance, Charles Russell Stone reads each manuscript within the contexts of its production, scribal interpolations, and patronage and readership in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. While Thomas recalls a range of attitudes towards his protagonist in the late twelfth century, when the recovery of classical histories and composition of vernacular romance informed conflicting attitudes towards Alexander’s legacy, scribes and readers of his poem appropriated it as a continuing commentary on power, politics, and the relevance of the Alexander legend in their own time. Each of the three major manuscripts of Thomas’s poem thus offers a unique text informed by unique literary and political contexts, which this book situates within the ongoing debate over Alexander’s reception as a paradigm of imperial authority or failure in late medieval England.

As a multilingual and multicultural zone, the Eastern Mediterranean offered a broad market for tales in both oral and written form and longer works of fiction, which were translated and reworked in order to meet the tastes and cultural expectations of new audiences, thus becoming common intellectual property of all the peoples around the Mediterranean shores.
