La langue arabe apparait, avec le Coran, dans un état qui ne sera jamais fondamentalement remis en question, du fait de la récitation indéfiniment reprise de ce livre et de son caractère sacré. Cela sera déterminant pour l'apparition des sciences arabes et les marquera du caractère de l'oralité, même dans le cas des sciences linguistiques. C'est dans ce contexte qu'apparaitra la langue philosophique et qu'œuvrera Fârâbî. Mais alors que pour ses prédécesseurs non-philosophes la question de l'origine et de la formation de la langue se posait en termes de perfection, d'excellence et de transmission d'un dépôt, avec Fârâbî le problème sera posé en termes de connaissance et en fonction du besoin de communication propre à l'homme. Nous avons chez lui une théorie de la formation de la langue qui pose le problème en termes de dénomination. Sa problématique montre, avec la constitution progressive des sciences, la nécessité d'un nouveau type de recours à l'écriture et le besoin d'un métalangage. Et, dans le cas de la philosophie, la naissance du vocabulaire obéira a certains principes qui prendront en compte les rapports entre philosophie et religion, les exigences d'ordre démonstratif de la philosophie et le besoin, pour la langue philosophique, de rester organiquement liée a la langue courante tout en s'en distinguant. Dans sa pratique, Fârâbî sera fidèle à la théorie ainsi élaborée. Ainsi, dans le domaine de la logique, il tient compte de la double exigence de rigueur dans la méthode et de respect des usages linguistiques. De même, dans l'usage des concepts philosophiques, il montre bien comment la langue philosophique s'articule sur la langue courante.
