Lewis County
Author: William M. Talley
Publisher: Arcadia Publishing
ISBN: 9780738518138
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 132
Book Description
Lewis County, located in far northeastern Kentucky, was formed in 1806 and named for explorer Meriwether Lewis. The county was once teeming with industry as a supplier of finished goods and agricultural products. Historically, the county's proximity to the Ohio River allowed the export of timber and salt, and in the 1800s, railroad transportation made Lewis County an influential source of railroad ties, boat-building materials, and barrels. In later years, the area was most popular for its health resorts, spas, and "sulfur waters," which attracted visitors from as far as New York and Chicago. The images in this volume depict the county's military influence, as Lewis Countians had strong allegiance to the Union during the Civil War. The photographs featured in Images of America: Lewis County have been drawn from the archive of the Vanceburg Depot Museum and from various private collections.

Rural Democracy
Author: Marilyn Patricia Watkins
Publisher: Cornell University Press
ISBN: 9780801430732
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 268
Book Description
What happens to social movements in rural settings when they do not face the divisive issues of race and class? Marilyn Watkins examines the stable political climate built by successive waves of Populism, socialism, the farmer-labor movement, and the Grange in turn-of-the-century western Washington. She shows how all of these movements drew on the same community base, empowered farmers, and encouraged them in the belief that democracy, independence, and prosperity were realizable goals. Indeed they were - in a setting where agriculture was diversified, farmers were debt-free, and - critically - women enjoyed equal status as activists in social movements. Rural Democracy illuminates the problems that undermined Populism and other forms of rural radicalism in the South and the Midwest by demonstrating the political success of those movements where such problems were notably absent: in Lewis county, Washington. By so doing, Watkins convincingly demonstrates the continuing value of local community studies in understanding the large-scale transformations that continue to sweep over rural America.
