The Rochellers, at the fame time, took up arms in defence of their religion, and called in the Englilb to their afliftance; who fent a navy of an hundred and twenty fhips, under the command (f the Duke of Buckingham but a'l to no effee'r. For though the Englifh landed in the ifle of Rhee, after many {harp conflicts, yet they were foon expelled again, and a long liege laid to Rochelle, under the conduct of Cardinal Richlieu' and the Marihal de Schomberg, who reduced that city to the King's obedience, rafed the walls, and left it as open as a wllage, that it might be a terror and example to others; teaching them rather to confide in the clemency and faith of their Sovereign, than to try the force of his arms. This was done in the year 1628. From which time the rebels, as it were by firife, returned to their duty, 'feekmg who (hould be mofl: forward in teftifying their obedi ence to the King, and their repentance for what was pails Thus was peace once more reflored to France at home, that the King might have the more leifure to profecute the warin Italy; whither he led his vicio rions army, taking many towns in his way to Cazal, which he haftened to relieve, it'being at this time be fieged by Spinola, the Spanifh General.
