Book Description
For decades early childhood educators in high-quality programs have understood that the transition into reading and writing occurs naturally when young children are surrounded by opportunities to interact with print in ways that are meaningful to them. The original edition of More Than Letters, first published in 2001, showed teachers how to intentionally help children develop literacy skills through hands-on, play-based activities. Like the original edition, the Standards Edition is based on theory and research. It contains new chapters that specifically focus on developing the skills needed to decode literature and informational text. Expanded chapters include activities that target specific concepts included in national literacy standards.

Book Description
"Letter-a-week" may be a ubiquitous approach to teaching alphabet knowledge, but that doesn't mean it's an effective one. In No More Teaching a Letter a Week, early literacy researcher Dr. William Teale helps us understand that alphabet knowledge is more than letter recognition, and identifies research-based principles of effective alphabet instruction, which constitutes the foundation for phonics teaching and learning. Literacy coach Rebecca McKay shows us how to bring those principles to life through purposeful practices that invite children to create an identity through print. Children can and should do more than glue beans into the shape of a "B"; they need to learn how letters create words that carry meaning, so that they can, and do, use print to expand their understanding of the world and themselves.

Not illustrated. 1851 edition. Excerpt: ... Letters on early education, tr. With a memoir of Pestalozzi Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi ADVERTISEMENT. When the Translator, at the request of his muchrespected friend, to whom the following Letters are addressed, undertook to revise the manuscript with a view to its publication, he was fortunate enough to obtain from Pestalozzi, permission to make any alterations that might become necessary from the circumstances under which the letters had originally been written. Of this privilege, the Translator has availed himself freely j but not more so than he considered himself authorised by the state in which he found the manuscript, and his familiarity with Pestalozzi's views, which the study of his works, and the recollection of the days spent in his society, have tended to produce. However, as he "who might have sanctioned the execution, as he had encouraged the design, is now no more, the Translator has the satisfaction to state, that the following sheets, previously to their publication," have been submitted to the eye of some of the wannest, as well as most enlightened, friends of Pestalozzi. And here the Translator might address himself to the indulgence of his readers, and call their attention to the difficulties which, as a foreigner, he must necessarily have had to encounter, in writing in a language not his own; but he prefers an appeal to their sense of justice, and earnestly solicits, whenever the sentiment may be wanting in perspicuity, or the expression in correctness, --whenever, from an attempt at distinctness, the impressive eloquence of the original may have been "sicklied o'er with the pale cast of thought,"--that these blemishes may be visited solely on him, the Translator, and that the candid read
