Book Description
Excerpt from Letter to the Right Hon. The Lord Provost of the City of Edinburgh, Regarding the System of Education Pursued at the High School There are two principal avenues to knowledge - the study of words and the study of things. But words are but the arbitrary signs of ideas, and have no value independent of those ideas. To account the mere knowledge of words, therefore, as wisdom, is to mistake the cask for the wine, and the casket for the gem. I say all this, because knowledge in words is often. Extolled be yond its just merits, and put for all wisdom, while knowledge of things, especially of the productions of nature, is derided as if it were mere folly. - Kirby and Spence' s Introduction to Ento mology, vol. I. P. 25, 26.the present state of society. But we have been so long accustomed to attach a high value to classical education as the medium of liberal know ledge, without reference to the change that has taken place in Europe within the last two hun dred years, that it still holds the same place as when all kn owledge was exclusively confined to the dead languages. We still cling to the ladder which has raised us to the eminence, forgetting that when the ascent is attained we might start from a new elevation. "Sir Daniel Wilson was the first teacher of history and English literature at the University of Toronto. Educator, administrator, ethnologist, man of letters, and antiquarian, Wilson is perhaps the best Canadian example of the well-rounded nineteenth-century scholar. His career, explored here in ten essays, paralleled the rise to authority in Victorian Canada of both science and educational institutions."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Description
Dugald Stewart's Empire of the Mind recasts the cultivation of a democratic intellect in the late Scottish Enlightenment. It comprises an intellectual history of what was at stake in moral education during a transitional period of revolutionary change between 1772 and 1828. Stewart was a childof the Scottish Enlightenment, who inherited the Scottish philosophical tradition of teaching metaphysics as moral philosophy from the tuition of Adam Ferguson and Thomas Reid. But the Scottish Enlightenment intellectual culture of his youth changed in the aftermath of the French Revolution. Stewartsustained the Scottish school of philosophy by transforming how it was taught as professor of moral philosophy at the University of Edinburgh. His elementary system of moral education fostered an empire of the mind in the universal pursuit of happiness. The democratization of Stewart's didacticEnlightenment--the instruction of moral improvement--in a globalizing, interconnected nineteenth-century knowledge economy is examined in this book.
