Book Description
Hispanic parishioners at Grace Episcopal Church in New Orleans told Doss and Frade of their friends' and relatives' dire situation in Cuba and pleaded for assistance. The two organized first a series of "freedom flights" that helped rescue more than one thousand people, but these were cut off when the great Mariel boatlift began. In a riveting narrative, Doss describes how he and Frade then purchased an old World War II submarine chaser they renamed God's Mercy, engaged in delicate diplomacy at the highest level of Cuban authority, and ultimately ran an American Coast Guard blockade to reach Mariel. Throughout his tale of the dramatic rescue, Doss intersperses compelling portraits of many of the participants and pilgrims, revealing the human faces behind a historic event filled with suffering, cruelty, and violence, as well as heroism and humor. Doss originally wrote Let the Bastards Go -- the title echoes a Cuban anti-émigré slogan -- in 1984, and Walker Percy provided a foreword. Doss decided against publishing it then, however, fearing that the wounds within the Cuban American community were too fresh. Now, thirty years later, the inspiring story of God's Mercy is available in a paperback edition.

These words tend to strike fear in the hearts of many alcoholics and addicts who are new to recovery, because just one day without booze or drugs may as well be an eternity. It can seem like an impossible task to get through twenty-four hours, never mind a week or a month - so just how do we get that proverbial monkey off our back? This book is full of suggestions that can work for anyone who is new to recovery or trying to get clean and sober again. The author has drawn on her own experiences and that of others in early recovery to determine the 'Fifty Things Every Alcoholic and Addict Should Know, ' including: The First Thirty Days - What to expect and how to get through it Things to Avoid - Protecting your recovery and coping with stress Relapse - Warning signs and moving forward if it happens Family - How to include them and re-build relationship Dating in Recovery - The not so good, the bad and the ugly Dry Drunk - How not to be one Twelve Step Programs - How they work and what you should know "If you have a substance abuse problem and want to quit or are new to sobriety and don't know what to expect, read this book. Book Description
This book is a social and political commentary on America's most pressing problems in the first quarter of the 21st Century. It is written for the author's grandchildren of 50-100 years hence. They will never be able to find many of the details and minutiae of this decade. Knowledge and experience benefit future generations. Most people experience a time in their lives when they wish they knew more about their ancestors. In the past it was excusable because the means of obtaining that information was difficult. Modern technology means this generation has no excuse for ignoring their history. Illegitimi Non Carborundum relates current events to fascinating solutions. The federal budget can be balanced, prison populations can be reduced by half, and welfare rolls can be reduced or eliminated. Present leaders cannot think beyond the box. We can create innovative and original solutions with positive ideas. Asking important questions and condemning the ignorance of leaders who seek office but fail to lead is vital to today's issues. If you want to be one of those rare people who is not politically or socially bound to the present trend of pious correctness, this book will raise your consciousness and either make you applaud or fiercely condemn. There is plenty of blame to go around, but there is light at the end of the tunnel. This is the book with solutions that will turn America around.

Book Description
With a new Introduction by the author, this “erudite and brilliantly readable book” (The Observer, London) expertly dissects the political, economic, and social origins of Western civilization to reveal a culture cripplingly enslaved to crude notions of rationality and expertise. With a new introduction by the author, this “erudite and brilliantly readable book” (The Observer, London) astutely dissects the political, economic and social origins of Western civilization to reveal a culture cripplingly enslaved to crude notions of rationality and expertise. The Western world is full of paradoxes. We talk endlessly of individual freedom, yet we’ve never been under more pressure to conform. Our business leaders describe themselves as capitalists, yet most are corporate employees and financial speculators. We call our governments democracies, yet few of us participate in politics. We complain about invasive government, yet our legal, educational, financial, social, cultural and legislative systems are deteriorating. All these problems, John Ralston Saul argues, are largely the result of our blind faith in the value of reason. Over the past 400 years, our “rational elites” have turned the modern West into a vast, incomprehensible, directionless machine, run by process-minded experts—“Voltaire’s bastards”—whose cult of scientific management is empty of both sense and morality. Whether in politics, art, business, the military, entertainment, science, finance, academia or journalism, these experts share the same outlook and methods. The result, Saul maintains, is a civilization of immense technological power whose ordinary citizens are increasingly excluded from the decision-making process. In this wide-ranging anatomy of modern society and its origins—whose “pages explode with insight, style and intellectual rigor” (Camille Paglia, The Washington Post)—Saul presents a shattering critique of the political, economic and cultural establishments of the West.

Book Description
The oil sands. Global warming. The National Energy Program. Though these seem like modern Canadian subjects, author Mary Janigan reveals them to be a legacy of longstanding regional rivalry. Something of a "Third Solitude" since entering Confederation, the West has long been overshadowed by Canada's other great national debate: but as the conflict over natural resources and their effect on climate change heats up, 150 years of antipathy are coming to a head. Janigan takes readers back to a pivotal moment in 1918, when Canada's western premiers descended on Ottawa determined to control their own future--and as Margaret MacMillan did in Paris 1919, she deftly illustrates how the results reverberate to this day.
