Mississippi University for Women was a pioneer in the Southeast Region as well as the State of Mississippi in encouraging, promoting, and sponsoring intercollegiate athletics for women. The programs were always of the highest quality and conducted with integrity. The students and coaches involved were dedicated and committed to their respective sport. Loss of the Physical Education Assembly Building, destroyed by a tornado in 2002, and the subsequent decision (2003) by the university to cease participation in intercollegiate athletics prompted the writing of this book. Physical resources and historical records had been destroyed. Concern that the knowledge of this program would be lost along with its signifi cance to the university alumnae, and womens sport history, challenged five retired Health and Kinesiology faculty members to write this book. They knew that their collective knowledge and experiences were invaluable in recording a century of athletic competition at the W. These women promoted the educational model of sport believing that the opportunity to participate in sports brings both value and pleasure to the quality of life.

Kitty O'Neil was an American stuntwoman and powerboat racer who was born deaf. Despite her hearing loss, she became one of the most accomplished stuntwomen in Hollywood, performing stunts in various films and TV shows, including "Wonder Woman," "The Bionic Woman," and "The Blues Brothers." Her most famous stunt was a 127-foot fall from a helicopter for the 1979 film "The Incredible Hulk." O'Neil also participated in motorsports and set a land-speed record in 1976, reaching 512 miles per hour on a rocket-powered vehicle. She later retired from stunt work and became a spokeswoman for the deaf community, advocating for better opportunities for people with disabilities. Throughout her life, O'Neil faced numerous challenges due to her deafness, but she never let it stop her from pursuing her dreams. She was a pioneer for women in the stunt industry and a role model for people with disabilities. Her legacy continues to inspire others to break down barriers and overcome adversity.

The traditional picture of a Victorian public school assumes that it was founded on Thomas Arnold, Tom Brown’s Schooldays and Rugby football. A Rifle Corps, Oxbridge Blues on the teaching staff, and an ethos of esprit de corps were all part of the system. The cult of athleticism reigned supreme. This was not the case at Uppingham School during Edward Thring’s headmastership from 1853 to 1887. Here a balanced physical education of gymnastics, athletics, games, swimming and country pursuits flourished within a sane but revolutionary educational framework. Thring’s Uppingham, however, was an Athens surrounded by Spartan strongholds. The Spartans were kept at bay during Thring’s lifetime, but, after his death, they closed in and even claimed Thring as one of their own. His ideals were hijacked by the sportsmen and then perverted by the militarists. Thring’s theory and practice of physical education lived on outside the traditional public schools, was adopted by the progressive school movement, and eventually found acceptance in all good schools. Its legacy can be found in the first National Curriculum for Physical Education and in all schools that value physical education as a vital ingredient of holistic education. This book will inform trainee teachers, practising teachers and teacher trainers of the men and women who have strived since 1800 to secure a place for physical education in the curriculum for all pupils. British athletics in the era of Chariots of Fire is explored through the rediscovered life of amateur and professional runner and leading British coach, Alec Nelson. Though necessary for competitive success, professional coaches were kept firmly in their place by the socially elite athletes and administrators of the sport. The contradictions and hypocrisy within athletics, and the class-based antagonism between amateurism and professionalism, are central themes of this book.
